Outer Limits 4x4 Board

My LWB td42 has developed a real nasty vibration between 80 and 100kph. It is less noticeable when accelerating or in a lower gear (ie its noticeable in 4th gear at 80kph but change to 5th at 80 and its twice as bad)

There is play in the splined section of the shaft so I'm guessing its new tailshaft time , although I'm yet to remove it and drive in front wheel drive to check. Are they the same as petrol ones or are they model specific? and how much do they normally go for?

i have a TD42 LWB, i have swapped the tail shaft for one out of a TB42, so 4.2 petrol and diesel are the same, but be sure you do not get one out of a 3.0L petrol as they have smaller unis and do not fit,

Anyone know if its possible to get them reco'd or is it totally stuffed once there's play in the splines?

any tail shaft mob should be able to put new splines in it, best bet is go see one and ask them what they recomend, as you will need to consider the price of gettin it re-splined, or gettin a second hand shaft with un known history,

Are you sure that it is the tail shaft? mine does the same thing and I had mine balanced and fully checked out and it was not the shaft.
What size lift do you have?

I believe some gq's can require gearbox spacers and some seem to be ok without.

I've put mine down to possibly a rim that is out of round or something like that.

I tell you what though if anyone has a solution if it is common then I would be rapped to get rid of the vibration in mine.

It's had the lift in for over a year now with no dramas. I know I have mud inside at least one of my front tyres (you can hear it when you spin the wheel). But its a definate vibration - rattles the whole car between 80 and 100. Last thing I wanna do is replace it and the vibration still be there. I'll try removing it and driving in front wheel drive to see what happens.

hi i have a driveshaft repair shop in brisbane .your vibration sounds like spline wear to me unlike cruisers GQS are not very tolerant to spline wear if vibrating mainly on coasting but not under power most likely splines ,also unis could be nochy common also for GQS .to rebuild the shaft using teflon coated splines we charge 550.00. if you have more than 2 inch lift some angle correction may be needed either by spacing down transfer case or fitting adjustable trailing arms to adjust pinion angle ,check also all your trailing arm bushs and arms for straightness

ok so u got wear in the splines, had ya tried greasing it all up first to see if it makes any noticeable difference?

Depending on whattype of wobble it is.
Panhard Rod bushes, give them the death shacks. When they go.

Definately not the death wobble - I got rid of that ages ago - front panhard was the main cause.


Im greasing it tomorrow , see if it makes a difference.
