2H oil leak

got a bit of a problem. After sinking the 40 in a puddle, the motor started to leak large amounts of oil between the g-box, and the motor. To fix it, I dropped the gearbox off, and also the plate between the gearbox and the motor. The crank had a few scores in it (no more than when I looked it first time around) so to fix that, I placed a speedy sleeve on it.

The rear main seal is good, tight aftermarket unit that seams to be doing its job. I also replaced the seal on the rear main housing with RTV glue and it sat there at least a day before the car was started in the attempt to dry the RTV off. I put it all back together, and it was still leaking, but a much smaller amount of oil (just a couple of splashes on the concrete at night).

I just replaced the sump gasket and I also placed some RTV glue on the rear of the gasket just to make sure….. I changed the oil out, and after getting the motor up to temp, it still leaked. I also had the head off it, and it was straight as a die, and I also placed a new head-gasket on it + all bores and pistons checked out okay.

There is no excessive blow-bye, so I’m sure that it’s isn’t pressuring the sump, and pushing oil out of the main seal. There is no oil coming off the gallery, nor the oil filter housing……….

Any idea's??

I had the same problem, to which I was convinced it was the rear main as I had only replaced the sump gasket about 2 months prior..

Under STRONG advice from my mech, I changed the sump gasket again and presto...it didnt leak anymore.

When I first bought my 60, it was leaking a lot of oil. I thought it was the rear main or the oil pan gasket. Changed the oil pan and it kept leaking...Lucky I didnt drop the gearbox cause it turned out to be a split rocker cover gasket that was leaking right down the back of the motor out of sight.

The rubber seal had torn down the back of the motor.

I had the same problem with mine!!! Only difference is....... I dropped my g'box out 4 times :bad-words: :bad-words: before it finally resolved itself.

This all happened straight after rebuilding mine(everything machined and adjusted perfect) when the rear main kept leaking(weeping) and leaving about a 5cent piece of oil on the driveway each night. I got the shits with it and ended up pulling the box out 4 times to try and fix it. By the 3rd time by myself, I could have the g'box on the floor within just over an hour AND with no use of air tools. Not sure if I could still pull that off now though!!!

In the end I just put up with it and the seal finally bedded itself in and doesn't leak a thing now..... THANK F*$K.

Thanks for the advice.

Dropped the sump and replaced the gasket. Still leaked like a pissed pollie. So droped the sump again and did some panel beating to straighten up the edges, punch the bolt holes down etc, put heaps of RTV on both sides of the gasket and now it leaks just a bit, still from the same area at the back of the sump/gearbox join.

Dammed if I know what to do next. Pretty sure it's not the rear main seal, and there's no oil coming from anywhere else. Definetely sump oil - as clean new oil leaked out after I chenged it.

I think I'll pretend it's a Rover and forget about it for a while. See what happens.

Thanks again.

I have been told by a few mechanics that too much of any gasket sealer can be a bad thing.

You are obviously on the right track since the leak is now smaller than what it was...if the sump itself is a little out of shape, would having two gaskets in there work? That would allow for any wobblies in the sump, and gain a better seal?!? yes? no?

Thought about using 2 gaskets, but figured that RTV sealant on both sides would have the same effect. Positive it's not the sump leaking now, and if it does not stop, I'll pull the gearbox again to check that the rear main and speedy sleeve are OK.

Have heard that speedy sleeves can fail, eg, by spinning on the shaft. This has happended to our Inter tractor, which has leaked ever since (you can see it through an inspection plate but it's too big a job to bother). Or the seal may have chucked it in cause of the speedy sleeve  .

ATM just hoping it'll go away.......

sorry I didn't reply to your PM, had sick daughter.

what carts said - make sure it's not running down from above.

if you're going to pull the sump again, clean off ALL the old gasket and goo, straighten the sump flange and make sure the whoel sump is square against a known flat surface. put it back on with a decent bead of RTV and NO gasket.

good luck, I hate oil leaks.
