HID balasts are they waterproof?

how waterproof are HID balasts? any particular care in how they are positioned. just got a set of 50W and going to mount them.

I forget if the 50watters are IP rated. Should be 'moisture' proof at least.
If you were to run a bead of silicon around both the 12v grommet and the high tension grommet, as well as another bead around the base of the ballast, I rekcon you'd make it that much better.
I havent bothered doing the above yet to any of mine. I really should. One particular pair I've dunked (el-cheapo's 'made in china' ballasts) a few times now, doing silly river crossings. So far they have survived and still work fine.

If they are xtec brand, then they are waterproof to about 1.5m and should withstand avge engine bay temps ie 80+ deg. I have had them sitting under water in the outback challenge for about 1 1/2 hrs and there were no issues with them, but I agree with bushy that it would be advisable to run a bead of silicone around them. I have mounted the ballasts exposed on the front of bullbars, and next to turbo manifolds without issues (this was just to test the product befor I sell it) but would advise that you mont them where they are not visible so people don't see you have hids and steel them.
