Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi i have a new air cleaner assembly that im putting on my fj40 and it bolts under the front 2 passenger side head bolts, is it safe to unbolt these 2 head bolts or do i have to undo all of the head bolts in sequence just in order to take those 2 out? thanks.

This is a tricky question.

If it was me I would simply unbolt them and then re torque them. Might pay however to re torque the whole head in sequence for safety.

I would not want a setup like that. Are you sure there isn't meant to be a bracket or something in between? Because I wouldn't want to have to undo head bolts if I ever needed to take the air cleaner assembly off.

are you sure its not meant ot be the rocker cover bolts?

he's right, 2f aircleaners attach via a bracket that bolts to the two forward head bolts on the passenger side. the bracket then bolts to the air box via 4 (i think) smaller bolts. but if you stuff the original bracket, yes, you gotta undo head bolts to change it

If it was me Id do it this way.
Crack both off a little bit. Undo one, swing bracket with tension on other one. Swap in new, tighten so you can just swing new bracket, loosen other, remove old, position new, retighten, check torque on all if you feel you need too.

peeeeehhh i have done a few like this

just unbolt, attach/detach and rebolt/retourque.

The 2f motor is not a wus, so it will have no troubles with it

You should have no problems of the engine is dead cold, when performiong a retension after a head gasket replacement the retension should be done cold unless other specified.

As said before the old 2f is pretty strong & with a cast iron head shouldnt warp with only two bolts lostened. As Bazzle said probably worth checking tourque on all as well, I have seen engined with uneven tourque after a few years.

be safe and do it the proper way. as strong as it may be. just undo all of them in the right sequence and then just re-torque all of them in the right sequence it will only take about 10 mins longer.

And the 10mins to take the rocker cover off and then the 10mins trying to get it back on with that bloody gasket!!

Wow some of you blokes are a lil drastic. I've had those 2 headbolts off before to swap air cleaner brackets. As was said, as long as you do it with engine cold and you torque them to their correct level you shouldnt have any problems. This is not a delicate late model ricer with an alloy head and forced induction....... But hey, if some of these blokes have scared the bejesus out of you (as it seems was their intention) then do it the long way. Either way you will acheive the same result. Good luck with your choice.

I agree. This is such a no stress job on this motor that it in not worth the stress. Loostening all the head bolts will cause more problems than good

sadly for once i agree with the bodgy mechanics >_< just undo the 2.

I must have a different 2f as I changed a head gasket on the weekend and the air cleaner is in the front on the drivers side and the air cleaner pipe running across the top of the engine has 2 bolts holding a bracket down into the rocker cover.

I would crack them in opposite sequence and retourque them in sequence and in stages even though changing a head gasket is easy its messy and If you can avoid having to do it why not
