				altenator on 22R overcharging

				was driving home before, battery light went on and I saw the charge on the dash board head straight up to 16V.
is this common? is it just something as small as the regulator? I remember my old celica with the 3T-GTEU motor in it had this same prob, was just the regulator on it..

				My ammeter shows my alternator regularly charging at 16v.
I am running three batteries though.
It has always charged at 16v from memory and have never had a problem.The 16v has been double checked with an independant meter and is actually 15.8v
Haven't had the light come on though.

				well, its always been on 14's..and all of a sudden, the light comes and and charge is peaking (it only goes upto 16v - and its at that)..

				My voltage regulator on my 22R died and it fried the + output cable from the altenator.  Burnt right through!

				I am assuming here your 22R is in a Hi-lux?
My car is a 4runner and the ammeter goes to 18v.
I have heard that the early regulators had a problem with the exciter coil.
This apparentky turns off your batt light as well as doing something mysterious to the alternator.I had a problem with a regulator in Broome several years ago.
My battery light came on but everything seemed to work fine.Battery charging and all auxilliary stuff worked fine.Without knowing too much about regulators I pulled the cover off  and found that the "lacquer" on one of the coils on my 4runner was darkened.
I got a second hand reg of an "old" cruiser and everything was fine for 2 weeks or so until the same thing happened.Got a brand new one in Karatha and still have it working fine 4 years later.
If the charge volts are peaking it is probably trying to charge the battery after some major drain,which could be regulator related??
There is a fellow on the "toymods" site called Grant who is an ace on electrical stuff.Maybe give him a holler if noone else can help.

				grab a regulator from a celica or corolla or corona or crown or any pre 86 (ish) toyota*, they are all the same.  it should regulate the voltage between 13.5 and 14.4 volts, 16 is definitely bad.
*some models up to even 1992 (possibly later!) still have external regulators.  my '86, '87, and '89 bundys all did.

				change the regulator (new one), and its still doing it.. spoke to an auto elec and he thinks a diode could have popped in the altenator..
