Gday, my rear diff is leaking oil from the seal of the backing plate. and i want to obviously fix it. My first questioin is: is ther a seal on the backing plate or is it just a silicone job. And secondly how much oil does the rear diff hold? cheers guys

Im pretty sure there would be a gasket there. If it comes off cleanly you may be able to clean it up and put some gasket goo on it.
Id probably just get a new gasket... wouldn't be expensive. More of a time factor to get it.
Not sure on the exact litres of oil, but if you buy a 5L container you will have leftovers, and I think thats the smallest size you can buy anyway.
Don't forget you will need LSD oil for the F78 rear.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

There should be a cork gasket behind the cover plate, i assume this is what you mean. My experience with gaskets for Daihatsu's is, hellishly expensive and wait a lifetime for it. Go to Superheap or elsewhere and buy a roll of cork gasket material, probably 3 or 4 mm thick, use the cover as a template, cut it out, punch the holes, then cut about 1 inch smaller for the inside edge. Use some gasket goo on it as well. Job done, with leftover material for the next time you need a gasket. As for capacity, I think they are around the 1.5 litres.

Just done the rear diff bearings/seals on mine
(thanks Kane ) and the gasket is about $5
, got it from the bearing shop that supplied the bearings, and they had it in stock
Doing just the seal shouldn't be too involved... and don't put it off just do it or you'll wreck the bearings like I did
This was on an F75 But can't imagine big there's much difference bar the LSD.
