Pulling rear axles from a 40 series diff

All,

Am trying to swap out a buggered rear diff centre with that of a known good one (1973 3 speed shorty cruiser). Being a non cruiser bloke, this be the first cruiser diff Ive ever looked at. Have undone tail shaft and have tried pulling the axles out by hand, screwdriver and hammer. Noticed a circlip on the inner side inside the centre after taking the back cover off the diff.

I'm assuming that the circlip is on the axle. If so, does it have to come off? or does that circlip just pull through after using something like a slide hammer on the end of the axle --- does the whole axle with circlip just pull out ?

Have searched the toyota section for 'pulling rear diffs' and came up with 99 pages and gave up looking after the first 6 pages. Googled and came back with nuffin. I will admit I havent done the dirty yet and downloaded a 40 series manual.

Was hoping someone might be kind enough to say yep or nup.

cheers
dave

theres 1-2 nuts/bolts inside the center undo it and a large solid steel block should basically fall out
then push the axle in towards the center remove the c clip then remove the axle

Cheers! Sounds dead-set straight forward. Quite obvious that I didn't look hard enough...

thanks again.

Thanks pcman. I pulled them out yesterday arvo and got the centre out. I feel a bit silly now coz it is (now) so blatantly obvious! Cheers again.
