Has anyone rebuilt their power steering box?

My L300 4x4 Power Steering box is leaking from the top (where the steering shaft enters)Ive removed the top case and inspected the seal, it does look poo, I just rang the power steering specialists, They said a new seal kit is $70. Thats not bad...however the guy said that 90% of the time its not the seal.. its the hard chrome on the shaft itself... and a new seal wont stop the leak for long. He gave me a price on a re-con unit.. $700!!!!!

Has anyone else had this drama? any ideas on what i should do next? :(

If it is the hardchrome worn as they said, you can get the shaft re-chromed, this is proberly what they do. If you can do the box yourself this may end up cheaper.

I put a new high pressure seal on my Rodeo stg box about 6 months ago. (The same one you need to replace)
The shaft on mine isn't chromed either and it is a teflon seal.
Hasn't leaked since.
Replacing the seal on mine was easy though as it is an external one but if yours is internal you probably have to pull the box apart.
Might best be left to a mechanic who has done steering boxes and he might be able to get a good 2nd hand shaft from another box.
If yours does happen to be a teflon seal then everything has to be clinically clean and dry when the seal goes on. As the shaft turns around the seal the teflon from the seal impregnates the shaft where it contacts so the shaft doesnt wear. Well eventually the seal will wear out again.

Steer clear of speedie sleeves on seals that hold any pressure, you usually end up with an oil leak under the sleeve. If you do use them, try using liquid metal or such under the sleeve when installing them.
