BIG DIFF!

hey all,
I got a cab chassis mq ute as a scraper, when I was going over it I found a front double cardinal

, but what really cought my attention was the rear diff, it is huge!! the chassis plate say's it's a hh3348, but the pumpkin is about 45-60% bigger than the swb diff I have, I got my brother around to check it out, and he reckons it's about as big as a bronco/f150 unit.
So my question is; Is this what it is like from the factory because it's a cab/chassis ute with a 1tonne payload?

Diff is 'heavy duty'

H260. Very strong, pretty much all versions of this diff standard in MQ-MK and early GQ UTES with semi-floating 1.5" 37spline axles. There was a version with.....34 spline axles . This diff also came out in an offset version in G60's. GU's utes , have this same diff, but with fully floating 37spline axles.. GU wagons semi floating..

Woo-who!, thanks mate
Does that mean it's 4.8 ratio? And can you briefly explain in laymens terms what you mean by half floating /full floating? I assume it's to do with axle set-up?

I think SD33T versions came out with 4.8 ratio diffs
In a semi-floating axle, the axle shaft supports as well as turns the wheel. The shaft usually has a flange machined onto the end with studs in it on which the wheel attaches. Axle shaft is usually supported by a single bearing, but in GQ/GU wagon rearends, there are 2 wheel bearings. If axle shaft breaks, you will loose the roadwheel, most light duty trucks and pretty much all cars use semi-floating axles..
On a fully floating axle, the road wheel mounts to a hub assembly, which is in turn fixed to the axle case by a stub axle or spindle with a hollow center. The axle shaft passes through this hollow stub axle, and drives the hub with the road wheel attached. If the axle shaft breaks, you loose drive, but dont loose your roadwheel--hence why heavily loaded vehicles have this set-up. The front axle of your Patrol is a fully floating axle.
The H260 also came out as a floating version in some models of Nissan truck (Cabstar) The hubs here are a bit larger than Patrol versions though, but still use 1.5" 37 spline axles.

Thanks for the detailed and clear explanation, The donner that it came from was an 82sd33 cab chassis. I think it might be worth my while to do the diff swap after finding that out, I'd loose a litlle ground clearance but gain the strenght to drag through anyway, and I'm pretty sure it's 4.8 ratio

To the best of my knowledge, Nissan did NOT have 4.8 ratio from factory, it's only available aftermarket. 4.6 was the highest ratio available from the factory.

I'm pretty sure that the sd33 in cab chassis did come with 4.8 diff ratios. I think its mentioned in the bible somewhere....

should do, its the same centre as out of a 4.8 wagon.

Hijack #2 -
What are my chances of fitting an LSD centre from a later patrol into the rear axle of my G60?

pretty good.
There was a factory 4.8 ratio in both H233 and H260 diff. All ratios are listed in my 86 parts book. Trannies have a variety of 1st gear ratios also.

Heh, cool I am picking up a H260 rear diff this week. I will leave the light duty diff on in the meantime and keep my eyes peeled for an LSD to swap in.

Can the H260 crown wheel/pinion be used in a std GQ diffs?

H260 Crownwheel/pinion is bigger than an H233B. I think h260's with disc brakes dont have the thrust block in the diff center..

I got a wagon at the same time I got the ute. The wagon had 4.6's with a rear lsd, So can I fit an lsd from a rear 4.6 (from a wagon) into a 4.8 from a cab/chassis?

Yep, the only difference between the 4.6 and 4.8 will be the crown wheel and pinion teeth numbering combination (assuming they are both from a H260 centre)
The carriers should be the same size, thus u can fit the LSD in.

Will the lsd from a 4.6 h233 fit into a 4.8 h260 or vica versa?

No.

is that because of the bolt pattern on the crown gear? or inside diameter of the crown gear?

H260/H233 side by side. This H260 came out of a Nissan Civillan bus. Had floating axle shafts.

I couldn't see the pics, but the diff I want to put the lsd in isn't full floating set-up. I was hoping the centre wouldn't be to different so the lsd would just bolt in?

If the LSD center is out of an H233B, then you will be able to fit it in to a non lsd H233B. The H260 diff center is bigger to compensate for the larger diameter crownwheel. An H260 LSD center will fit in a non H260 LSD as long and it has 37 spline side gears. I believe there was a version of the H260 that had 34spline side gears.
