Turboing a 2l

Ok, so I am buying a 1987 LN65 hilux ute. It's a 2L (2.4diesel) enhine and has 270 000 on the clock, still on original motor. It starts fun and idles well, uses no oil and has no engine leaks or overheating problems. Does 100 without troubles down the highway. It's my uncles old truck and he has had it for quite a few years and in this time has had no problems with it at all.

As you know a old 2.4 diesel is very slow and hasnt got much torque. There is a bloke selling a turbo kit for this that suits my price range and I am contemplating putting the kit on it for a bit of extra go.
I would be fitting the turbo as it is all bolt up and has a zaust to go with. Then take it to get a proper tune and maybe a dyno to see if it was worth it at all.

Questions for you:
1. Is this a stupid idea, will the engine jsut cave in very quickly
2. What kind of boost should I think about runiing

Thanks in advance.

have a search first. afaik there are a few here who have done it. biggest downside is the low low gearing. good for 4x4 not to good for cruizing the highway.

if i remember correctly the later 2l-2 will fit the 2lt turbo gear. i can't rember if its the early 2lt or the 2lt-2, i think there is a slight difference in the manifolds so please check before buying.

That turbo kit will work, however after 270thou youd wanna change your big end/main bearings, depending on the amount of blow by (with the motor idling pull the little hose between the rocker cover and intake manifold off and watch for puffing of oil/soot/smoke), and appraise whether the pump and injectors need doing.

These engines arent all that well known for lasting for ages after being turbod, but if u keep it sensible (low boost, install and watch a pyro guage) and start saving for a new gearbox, it would be a worthwhile investment to over come the lack of power... :)
