Auto hub troubles

Just recently as in the past couple of days my auto hubs on my GQ shorty have developed the habit of clicking in in a half arsed way at about 80km/h. I'll be driving along and then they just start whirring, so I pull over put it into 4wd, drive forward and bit and back into 2wd and then off again and its usually worked. If it didnt then I repeat the process.
Now before anyone says just buy some manual hubs, it was already on the agenda but this is a problem in the mean time. Is there a spring or anything in the auto hubs that would slacken over time therefore allowing the above to happen???? If so, what can I do about it?

Have you changed your transfer case oil recently? the problems we had at nissan when i was there was caused by too thick transfer oil. It should have nissan matic D fluid in it. The thick oil causes the shaft to turn at high speeds partially engaging the hubs.
Hope this sorts the prob for you.

Had the same trouble this week. I pulled teh auto hubs apart and couldn't fiind anything wrong. I just locked both sides for the time being.
Went down to the wreckers and bought nissan manual hubs for $100 each!!
Auto hubs are crap (but handy at times)

its amazing what a clean and regrease does, they just need some attention from time to time especially if you have/had wheel bearing problems
