They are legal in NSW but they do have certain guide lines to follow but they probably vary from state to state.
I'm about to start building one for my patrol. I've checked it all out with the engineer thats engineering it before I started. I would suggest you find an engineer and ask him what you need to do to make it legal in your state. That way you shouldn't get any unwanted surprises.
Cheers Mick.

i asked this question and the exo is classed as a roof rack in qld, as long as it is pedestrian friendly, no sharp edges etc you will be right.

i heard that if you can fit a hand between the exo bars and the body its not pedestrian friendly....because thats the first thing that goes through their mind when they get hit by a car....

Any source on that "heard"? I think they are looking for the real legislation in each state. Not putting you down, but try and back the statements up with links....

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Am now looking at wanting an exo cage, but am reluctant due to legality. I have searched the QLD Transport sites to see what is legal and what isn't, but am unable to find anything.
If someone can show some proof, it would be appreciated, I'm not going to spend the time and money on someone's heresay.
Cheers

going on several

phone calls on the subject, the same rules apply for an internal cage.
cant;
obstruct vision
impede entry/exit
have large gaps between body and bars
have sharp edges
must have;
visible lights (tail and head)
and the use of common sense
lots of other stuff but you get the point.
TALK TO THEM YOURSELF
do it more than once and talk to someone who will approve it. i got 3 different answers in 20 minutes
