I keep replacing my alternators because it gets full of mud and water.
Tomorrow I'm installing the second alternator this year .

How do you keep yor alternator running well in watery and muddy conditions?

Thanks

I had the same problem on my 60 after driving through tartis lake i had my altenrator recondiitoned and then i stuff it under warrenty and got a new one for free pretty much except i stuffed it again and it has been recondiiotned again after a year. My autoelectician pretty much told me my car wasnt a submarine but water is ok for the altenrator doesnt stuff it but mud does by clogging up the brushes and then the diards overheat underload. pretty much if u do go through mud wash it out with water straight away and u shouldnt have a problem thats what i do now

Mount it higher in the engine bay

Apparently its fairly common with the 80 series as well (if not all 4by's).

Since i filled my alternator with red mud (below) i have fitted bash plates under the front & it hasn't happened since, + i think dropping the speed down abit before hitting the mud hole also helps, but thats boring !!!

Note the mud on the stator contacts where the brushes as supposed to contact.
