Outer Limits 4x4 Board

The solenoids on my winch got soaked and now they're all rusted and look a bit suspect. I've got some new solenoids to put in but i was wondering why they are connected they way they are. Below is a schematic of how they are connected at the moment:




I just can't follow the logic in connecting them this way, and neither can my boss who has been in the electrical/electronic game for 20 years. for example, for "IN", S1 and S3 are energised. This connects F1 to Batt+VE and F2 to A....what does this do??????

I am only assuming that the terminals F1, F2 and A are connected to the windings in the motor this way, it is a bit hard to tell without pulling the motor apart. Is it safe to assume that the Battery-VE connection on the motor is also connected to terminal A? if so is it then possible to wire the solenoids as follows:



This basically puts the solenoids in parallel and halving the load on each one. But is it possible to wire them this way? i have my doubts cos they must be connected as above for a reason.....I just can't seem to figure it out.

Firstly... Yes you should get one of those solenoids... But if you stick to your current set up then that diagram is correct. When S1 and S3 are energized the current travels through S1 to F1 (which is Feild 1), out A (armature). It then bypasses F2 (field 2) by going through S3. Electicity takes the easiest path so Field 2 is overpowered by field one. This turns the motor in one direction. Energizing S2 and S4 does the oppossing turning the motor in the other diriection. This is why you have Three post terminals one your winch motor. Two fields and the armature.

But i still think you need one of Beretta's solenoid's.. Take your others back or something.. You wont regret it!

I think youve missed a bit. Where the Armature gos to ground.
The reversal of solenoids makes field reversed so it will go other direction.
It also puts 2 solenoids to aid in safety if one sticks.
