TB42 Spa

I hate cars. Not picky I hate them all at the moment.
Started to over heat on the way home
So stopped at heathcote to check it out. Pulled the rad cap off. And it let out abit of steam (mm that cant be good). Anyway top it up and it dont like that. keeps on spitting it back out.
Well my old TD42 shorty used to do this when the thermostat died. So I pulled that out. Went to to fill.
MMM still spits water.
Anyway said
and put the bonent down and started for home. Get 2k down the road. Temp drops to normal. Anyway since I know it didnt have heaps of water in it. I pull over in the next truck stop and top it up. Fills no worrys. but there is abit of bubbling going on. So I think its going to be a head gasket maybe.
Anyway it runs fine until I get to Bendigo (another 40k's) Then heats up again.
So pull over at the servo and go thru the routine agian. Where it doesnt like water (it spits it out).
So I put abit in throw the cap on drop the bonnet and drive off. And the darn temp drops again. And only starts to rise agian when I pull into the drive way.
And dont get me started on the magna (other car).

sounds like a head gasket to me , the old jackarro i had did it head gasket over heated wintin 2ks and it had te lil bubles and the smell of exhaust in the radatoir water:)

Put a thermostat back into it to begin with. The tb42 motor is fitted with a dual stage thermostat, which if removed, will cause the engine to overheat.

yep,
put it back in,
and the factory therm works the best. Aftermarket ones make the car run a little hotter than standard ones.

Ok I will give it a good flushing while its not there, then goto Nissan and get a new one. Oh and yes the thermosate does look abit more fancy than the one out of a TD42.

Well still havent got the thermosate yet. But I think I found the culprit. Had a good look around the engine for leaks and found a nice green colour liquid on the block under the exhuast.
Where the leak is, is as per usual right behind the extractors just to be helpfull.
actualy just had a twelth look. And all the welshplugs (think thats what they are - on and is it welch or welsh?). Are leaking on the left side of the block.
So I guess its a wieght for the hoist to be free and change them all then.
(now to get the boys to hurry up and Finsih sparky's GU)

As a licenced mechanic, I hav'nt had to do a set of welsh plugs in over 15 years. The other day I dropped a rocker cover screw onto the ground, and when I got underneath to pick it up I noticed one of my welsh plugs leaking (Trust me to buy a car that needs constant attention). Anyways, I know you're supposed to do the whole lot when one goes, but as the rest look fine, I'll do them as I need to. All I can say is, I hope it's another 15 years before I have to do another one.

Least yours is on the side.. min ewas leaking from the back of the motor.. gear box had to come out.. such a PITA.

NOw tha magic question are they hard to change and how do you do it?
Cos if its not hard I wouldnt mind having a go myself. Cos my mech is busy for the next 2 weeks.
And how much where they?

I know a certain uncle of yours that could make a mean resin to stop them leaking

I have used some of his stuff before, lasted 10yrs on the inside of the bore on 120y. Would love to have some of that stuff, even if I dont have a use for it.

actually sounds like an airlock in the block to me. usually caused by stuffed welsh plug. IF HEADGASKET IS NOT GONE.

the last time i did one all i did was bash the culprit in with a hammer or an extensoin bar an hammer grabbed it with a pair of multi grips pry it out clean up surface where welsh plug goes i think i used loctite or gasket goo i cant remember smear the surface of contact and gently tapp it in till it sits at the right spot

They are about $2 a welsh plug. In theory they are not hard to do, but in practice they are a pain in the ar$e. Use a punch to punch one end of the welsh plug in and then lever it out with a pair of pliers. Smear some Stag Jointing compound around the outer circumferance of the new welsh plug and using a similar size socket as a drift, tap the new welsh plug into the block. The reason they are such a pain in the bum at times is, that depending on where on the engine the welsh plug is, you may need to remove other bits such as manifolds, gearboxes, etc to gain suitable access to swing a hammer.
The one I did on mine recently was one of the small 18mm ones on the exhaust side of the block. I just had to remove an exhaust sheild to get access to it, but even then, there was little room to work.

Thanks for that Sexy fingers. That doesent sound to bad might have ago at doing them tomorrow night. As I got a night drive on sat night and have to work the weekend.
And there the same ones you did. Just below cylinders 2 and 3 are the leaking ones.
