Nothing really stands out as for problems with the Triton. They have the same running gear as in my Challenger and I have 105 k on mine with no probs so far! Reasonably good on fuel and running gear is reasonably strong for off road. Service intervals are 15k and do the biggie at 100k and you should have a reliable vehicle.

Disregard if we're talking petrol, here's my experience with the diesel.

The Bad,

Gearbox is a piss-weak old Sigma box, mine blew at 170K
4M40 Fuel economy is shitful! After fitting a turbo it's better but still worse that my comparitively massive and heavy 4.2TD Troopy
Service costs are high due to $55-60 oil filters.
4M40 is gutless, frustratingly slow!
The 4M40 eats glowplugs, I only notice it in the cold weather but they last no longer than 18 months in my triton, It's few hundred bucks to replace them.
The IFS is absolute carp!!!

The Good

The rear LSD is a ripper, after 170,000km it's till working well.
The motor is otherwise reliable but so it should be, being a diesel.

That's about it.

stoo2,

I'm amazed that you stuck to the vehicle as long as you did! :?

170k is not too bad for a "piss-weak" box!

IFS is IFS is IFS! If you don't want it, don't buy it.
I have never heard of a 4m40 "eating" glow plugs. There must be something wrong with your engine, if they don't last.

Being a diesel does not guarantee reliability.

My 4M40T "eats" glow plugs too. If you can call every 60000km eating them. But at about $60 a set, ah well.

Peter H

P.S. Still averaging 11.9 to 12.0L/100km after 360000km.

I'd just like to back up the piss weak gearbox comment. My 2001 diesel triton gearbox blew not once, but twice. Once at 80k and then again at 160k. Also the IFS would make some god awful noises dropping off kerbs, let alone in the ruts.

120,000 without issue... '03 V6 DC Triton and I have pushed it to and past some of it's limits.

the "god awful noise" you are hearing would be the bump stops for the steering - its the reason tritons have such terrible turning circles. tehre is a bolt that is used as a bump stop. the grinding of the full lock stop is what you are hearing.

Not so, because the first thing i did after trying to park the truck was wind the steering bump stops in as far as was possible without causing tyre fouling and it didn't necessarily make the noise only at lock.

MK diesel dramas

My 1998 MK mitzy chews through glow plugs like no tomorrow. They have to be replaced before each winter or its a no go.She has done 225000 with no other dramas at all. Gear box has taken a pounding and hasnt even looked like giving grief yet. The only thing that bothers me is the fuel consumption taking it easy returns 12-13l/hundred and if I get up it 15 is not hard to get. Injectors are next on the list to be repaired not sure if this will help economy.
