hey guys, just brought an 83 rangie and have HEAPS of questions:
1. whats the deal with the locker in the transfer case? was told it was a constant 4x4 so whats the deal? is the transfer like a lsd untill you lock it or what?
2. what sort of locker/lsd setups would you guys recommend. was thinking along the lines of a auto locker in the rear and a lsd front as I dont really want to be spending top dollar (budget issues)
3. what cheap options have i got when it comes to getting more power from the engine. would prefer to stick to something that doesnt require a computer. being pigs on juice would a higher lift cam help?
4. heard somewhere that moving the suspension mounts can result in a lot more diff travel, is this true? where do you relocate to?
have heaps more but that'll do for the time being, any help on the above would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance guys

It is constant 4x4 but the center diff is open thus only transferring power to front or rear but both when locked, maxidrive or arb for a rear locker with maxi upgraded axles - i dont think there is an lsd available for the front. Dont go a high lift cam, most will recomend a stock or slightly warm cam. A good exhaust and a set of efi rangie manifolds is a good budget setup. A good ignition system ( chuck the lucas dizzy ) will do wonders especially an electronic conversion. Dont touch the mounts unless you are going hardcore, properly matched springs and shocks will help with artic without screwing up the handling.

Loan do you have any info on the dizzy upgrades? Have a 4.6/3.5 hybrid and find its pretty gutless. Looking for cheap simple upgrade mods for more power

If you have the money now ,Gheto_Modz on here is selling his toyota converted axles for $1000, this will save heaps as you have upgraded axles and stronger centre with better ratios if you are going to run bigger rubber, your choice of lockers then is huge.
LRA for the springs and 80 series front shocks with GQ's in the rear with pin eye converters.

so the transfer is basically a single spinner diff till locked. does anyone have a recomendation for a decent cam?
has anyone had any experience with truetrac or aussie lokka in the front?
what are they like for steering on dirt tracks? is there much sledging in the front end? any probs with them not disengaging properly on loose surface tracks. really dont want to have to spend a fortune on air lockers, as i said, this will be a budget build as im hoping to finance most through trading/selling landie running gear and parts

If you put a locker in with stock axles you WILL break them, look into Jacmac or Maxi for stronger ones.

Air Lockers- they come up from time to time on the second hand market. I seen a complete 24 spline ARB air locker with compressor complete for $800 in the Trading post a while back.
I'm not a fan of auto-lockers myself, but some people have had some sucess with them. If you do, look at the 24 spline one and get the upgraded axles, stock 10 splne RR axles are crap and not worth a pinch IMO.

You can get maxi drive 10 spline axles, a mate runs them in the rear with a detroit style locker and i run them in the front of my gayrover with an air locker

Dynotech cams.
You can get truetrac lsd or detroit locker from
http://www.locked-drive.com.au/product.htm If you get a detroit locker you really should get 24 spline axles from Maxi-drive or Macnamarra as the stock 10 spline axles are weak and when they break axles the detroit locker will usually go as well.
The truetracs work reasonably well and don't affect steering. When you lift a wheel, it is usually necessary to dab the brakes to get the truetrac to transfer torque to the tyre with traction.

as cloughy was saying,i run a detroit with 10 spline maxi axles.i was using standard axles for about 8 years.was running 33s,35BFGs and 35 simex.you will snap a axle from time to time but they work ok just be careful with right foot.i did about 5 axles and never did any damage to the locka at all.if it broke i just kept driving till i got a chance to change the broken axle later that day.maxi 10 spline axles are the go if you can get a cheap detroit or just use standard axles till you are cashed up.
