Cutting Guards

What do you guys think is the best way to increase the radius of the guards (ie cut them), and maintain a lip for screwing flares into, whist still looking decent. want to increase approx 1 inch from around the whole guard.

Here are some options i've found through searching:
-Cutting the stock lip off, cutting guard then welding it back.. lots of work
-Fold the lip over a dolly without cutting anything. May distort the panel above the lip?
-Cut the guard and fold lip (without cutting slits)
-Cut the guard to approx 1/2 inch off where i want it, then cut slits and fold the slits into a new lip. and then possibly weld slits together.... May distort the panel above the lip?
-Cut the guard and fold lip (without cutting slits)

So any advice?

the best way is to cut out as much as you need to, then use small pieces of aluminium angle to hold on the flares.

how do you attach the alloy to the guards?
do you find you lose some of the strength of the guards and they flex easily?

cheers
