Rear housing swap?

Mate has a 86 model Hilux and the back brakes are all shot (all bits need replacing) and as he is a tight arse doesnt want to fork out for new parts.
Another mate has a rear axle from a 91 hilux and I was wondering if we do an axle swap would the diff from the 86 model will fit straight into the housing from the 91 model or are axle splines different?

Or would it be easier just to change over the drums etc? and will this all bolt up ?

If it is a leaf front and not IFS then yes they will swap no probs.

yes they are leaf fronts. so no problems putting the 86 model diff into the 91 housing then?

The axles between models are quite interchangeable, just a difference in lenght from leaf to IFS.
I actually have a 85 centre, with 96 IFS axles, in a 92 2wd housing.

The drums and brakes are bigger on the later model axle. If i were you i would fork out for the linings and wheel cylenders, tell your mate not to be such a tight ass when it comes to his brakes.
