3.9 Disco engine upgrade

Okay now when i first got my car i was reasonably happy with the performance but not with a set of 265's and a trip around australia next year towing a massive caravan im a bit worried its not gonna do the job.

See i have a problem, one thing i cant stand is sitting behind a couple with a big van doing 70kph up a hill..nothing shites me more on long trips and i vow never to be one of those people.

BUT i dont seem to have alot of option nor in my searches have i come across anyone who have done a upgrade on the 3.9 disco for touring and towing. Of course fuel economy plays a big part in this and will also determine my choice of ugrade engine.

So what do i do, my thoughts so far

- Work the original 3.9 or supercharge

-Replace 3.9 with 4.6

-Rip out whole 3.9 and replace with fuel injected holden 5litre

-Drive car down to brunswick deisels and pay heaps of money for a v8 diesel conversion???

Included in this decsion i will have to rebuild the gearbox aswell as the gears dont change right...bit crunchy

All thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated...

Buy a County with a Isuzu and turbo it, if you want fuel economy with a V8 disco towing, FORGET IT. a blown one or a 4.6 it doesen't matter, they get about 30 litres / 100 km or more towing.

Yopu will have to fit a decent gearbag if you go diesel, a Santana or a GQ 5 spd, both BIG $$$.

I think you will have to rethink at least the fuel economy part of the equation, as a decent diesel conversion and gearbox etc is expensive. So much so it is still cheaper to pour thousands of litres of ULP into the tank.

I'm with JustinC on this one. If you have the money you should look at getting the 2.8 TDI motor, and push the boost up.

Or rebuild the 3.9 for LPG and add of supercharger.

My 3.9 Disco has a computer upgrade from Bruce Davis. Not sure what benefits it has but the previous owner reckoned he got it to improve response under 2000rpm. Also has a 2.5in exhaust that was recommended to go with the computer. He also said it got better fuel economy as you didn't need to push it as hard. It does get better than other people say they get so perhaps it does.
If nothing else it sounds good :)

Sorry forgot to mention that ist lpg/petrol so i get the beneifts of lpg.

Also wanna take advantage of when the van is not hooked up i can really get her going, i guess at this stage im leaning towards the 4.6 but im not convinced yet. Got a total today for the v8 diesel conversion and im gonna be looking at 23k!!!
