fitting a second alt.

who has fitted one and I dont meed taking it to an auto ele.Because my cruiser is 24volts I dont want to get 2 deepcycle it would be too tight.I was thinking off fitting a small 12v alt. just for that it would be a lot cheaper than solar.

It's as simple as you would think. Get the thing in position, get a belt around it, and you're set. You need to know a few things to get the wiring right (mainly not to mix 12V and 24V!) but it's really pretty basic.
First step is to take a good look at your motor and figure out where an alternator could physically fit and "borrow" a belt.

well the posi is were the powersteering pully is the only thing i need is rpm off the 12volts cos it might be higher then what my diesel runs.So it might need to be a lux one

What kind of RPM does your diesel run at?
Remember the speed of an accessory comes from the engine speed, the main pulley diameter, and the pulley diameter of the accessory. The bigger the main pulley (on the engine), the faster the accessory runs. The smaller the pulley on the accessory, the faster the accessory runs. So rpm is only part of the equation.
I don't think the RPM will be a concern. An 85A bosch alternator might not put out the full 85A at ~1100 rpm or so, but it will still put out a fair bit. The hitachi in my Mav gets a bit weak below 650rpm or so (my car idles at about 400rpm), but above that it's fine.

This is a bosch alternator from a falcon. Those ford straight sixes are not super revvy either. I think you'd be alright. I thought it was cool how the two-piece pulley on these alternators can be packed out a bit to take a 16mm or 13mm or whatever size vee belt if you need it to. I mean the design was made to be cheap, but it turns out to be practical.
If the space is really tight, you might need to get a smaller alternator from a zuk or something. The SV21 camry alternators are easy to find for $20 or so, I have used a couple of those for swaps in the past and they were alright.
