Looking to buy a black soft top for my FJ40 SWB. Found this
http://www.4wdworld.com.au/products/softtops/fj40.htm which costs $1250 including freight within Australia.
I was thinking about getting fibreglass half doors and noticed that it doesn't come with the option for soft windows.
Does anyone have any experience with this top - good or bad?
Does anyone know of any other tops made in Australia and their price?
Any feedback much appreciated.

I dont know about that top but I'm thinking a good motor trimmer should be able to custom make a top for you to suit your needs. You might want it to have zip out windows and doors (for half doors) or zip off sections to turn it into a bikini top and to roll up the rear section. Worth getting a quote on as I think it would be about the same sort of money as that top or cheaper? My 40 came with a great custom top with all the options I just mentioned. There is a sticker on it that says:
Joh Faulkner Motor Trimming
07 3856 4156
19 Webster Road, Stafford.
Seeing as you are northside Brisbane he might not be too far away from you to pop in and get a price. He did a great job with this top, let me know if you want pics of it. Its a fastback type though which might not be what you want.

Cool thanks Ray.
Photo's would good.
I just found this mob in the US. Their top looks great, and it's the style that I want. It works out at about $1200 AUD plus shipping plus any customs duties. But it includes the two piece doors. And it's all unzippable like you said. And the fit and finish looks great. The down side is the manufacture timeframe. Probably about 12 weeks to get it to Australia. I'm not in a hurry though as the car is still being rebuilt - so waiting three months wouldn't be that bad - I don't think...
I'll definitely check out that guy in Stafford - thats nice and close. Any photo's you can send would be great. Are your half doors steel, fibreglass or vinyl?

i've been looking at how the soft tops on ur standard convertible car works. u know the one's that fold down to the rear, without having to unbutton and unvelcro all the time. i'd be interested to see if u could work out something like that. it might look a bit like a fast back soft top, but if you could just unclip it at the front and let it fold down it would be sweet.

This is the mob in the States I've been looking at
http://thejeep.com/stc/toyota.html. It looks like it might do what you were saying about the fold down to the rear bit. I'll give a call and find out. I really like the look of this top. Maybe I can get Joh Faukner or someone to put something like this together.

not sure if this is an oem fastback soft top but i got it when i got the cruiser from the PO.
sailrail across the windscreen and push clips all round. i need to replace them cos at 110kph they have a hardtime hanging on. this soft top doesnt seal with full doors and needs a rollbar to support it.
the original windows and zips were a bit abused, couldn't see out the back window.
took it to an auto upolsterer and he replaced the back window (not waterproof yet :( )..and full clear doors.

some auto upolsterers might have done 40 soft tops before. there is a place on webster road stafford i think. if your goin to an auto uplosterer make sure they crimp the clear bits and not just stitch it. prices i was quoted was around 400-600$ mark. the repairs to my existing softtop cost 300 ,
you could get lucky with a 2nd hand one from the wreckers that would just need a refit.
