Front or rear locker first?

Ok, imagine i wanna get a locker in my stock TJ. I reckon i'd leave the LSD in the rear and put the locker in the front. I'd be concerned about the cv's snapping and stuff in the front...even though i have stock tyres...

OR would i be wiser to load the locker in the rear and leave the front open? Hmmm... i need a lift first...

err jeeps what cv's :?:
Stock tj/cj/yj(?) diffs will handle lockers just fine, any other model well it varies...
BUT before you start talking lockers make sure you've got your diff ratio sorted or you'll just be wasting yer $$$

what i rackon is,
lock the front, with ARB or any other on/off type lockers,
than lock the rear with ARB as well
4.11 ratios and 32-33 tyres,
2" sus 1" body lift
SYE, bar works and a 9500TI winch.
and your pretty much set.

sounds like micks jeep

Just weld it

Seriously, put a locker in the front first(you should have no problems with blowing UNI-JOINTS)

hehe, let me get this straight - the UNI JOINTS are connected to the CV's i don't have which are connected to my engine which is connected to my stereo, right? Man, i should be a mechanic! I know my stuff.

Sorry dudes, late night last night...glug...glug...glug...

I am such an idiot :!:

Jeeps I got a LockRight in the front of My TJ. This initally I fitted while still running the stock ratios and rear trashlok....It was an AWESOME combo - and really transformed it offroad.....
The beauty with the lockright was that I was able to retain it when I regeared - BUT I did have to buy a new carrier.
However if you fitted an ARB or detroit to the front you'd need to replace it if you regear (hence my original question about your ratios)...

Anymore questions??

Wooders, as you know - i'm a stocker freak. How much would a lockright cost to fit to my stock beast? I want to be able to remove it and put it in the next TJ i buy and put the original diff back in, etc...possible?

By the way - no plans to re-gear. I thought that it'd be a nice toy to play with on the beach and the odd mud hole.

I paid about $200 to get it fitted - but if there is a next time I'll do it myself it's supposed to be fairly easy.....

How is it activated? Is as simple as pressing a button? Surely it won't work when in high range 2wd?

No press buttons on this Locker. It is on as soon as you engage the hubs

My vote would be to dump the LSD and put the locker in the rear straight away. The LSD fails pretty early on anyway and you'll get more traction benefit from the rear wheels than the front (more weight transfer to rear when climbing, push rather than pull etc..). Additionally, you have to deselect a front locker in tight sections of track to steer the beast so you might as well have the bebefit of the locker in the rear 100% of the time.

Front or rear...Just make sure it's a superior locker like well..a DETROIT for example.

If you use a lesser locker that relies on air or electricity you may get a common ailment known as "lockitis interruptis".

This horrific ailment causes your bowels to fail at roughly the same time your locker does...

Wooders ive fitted locrites to toyotas and nissans both were the diff center comes out as one unit with the jeep when you take the cover plate of what comes out just the centre leaving the pinion behind or what

The Jeeps have standard Dana diffs.
So when you ripp the cover off, there's nothing "attached" to it.
When you remove the hemisphere (or carrier or LSD or locker), you also remove the ring and spider gears at the same time - but the pinion remains set.
Answer your q??

Ok given some observations from Nissan trails

If the rear wheels are also the steering wheels ( only steering wheels like you are in reverse) would you still say rear locker before front ???

Duncan,

The ONLY times I know know it's there are:
1. On REALLY tight turns - she clicks away - easily masked by stereo on low, or wife nagging
2. In 4wd when it pulls like a champ.

It's been in there for about 4 years now and shows no adverse signs over time.
Hence I'm always happy to recommend for the front, but I'd be hesitate before ever recommending for the rear....
