Mate has got diff oil leaking down the rear disk brake guard on his 90 model GQ (semi floating?), he doesn't need to replace bearings yet. Does anyone know which parts to replace just to stop this leak?
thanks fnq

id say that the leak would be coming from the seal inside the housing. when u pull out the axle, the seal just in the housing. But i may b wrong, bit of a common problem and i have just replaced that seal b4 and fixed the problem. Hope this helps

Thanks Dave for the info, apart from that seal are there any other seals/gaskets needed or is the rest of the job all metal on metal contact?
cheers fnq

there are an inner and outer seal one of them you have to press off the wheel bearing to change and thats the one that allways leaks, and there is a inner seal also, but for around $60 - 70 a side you can buy wheel bearing kits that come complete with both seals and the bearing.

Just a tip. Make sure you check the condition of the surface that the outer seal runs on before reassembly, as if there is a groove worn in it you may still get a leak. A speedi sleeve should take care of it if that is the case, or just install the seal in a slightly different spot.
You might have to shop around for the bearings as they used to go for as much as $300 a side, so $60 would be a massive saving.
To do the job you will need access to a fairly heavy duty press.

I just had the read diff rebuilt on the 89 SWB and replaced the bearings at the same time....the good news is if you have rear drum brakes the bearings are around $50-60 each...the bad news is if you have rear discs (like me) the bearing kits are around $250-300 a side. All up with new genuine Nissan crown and pinion and both wheel bearings cost around $1900 fitted.

bearings i found that CBC well here in melbourne in dandenong i can get rear axle /wheel bearings for my 88 GQ for $120 a side there ya go boys hows that for saving heheh
also when i replace my rear axle oil seals and o ring i found them to still be leaking the axle was slightly egg shapped now i invested in a set of speedy sleaves also from CBC at $15 each there off which you slide down over the axle and give the new oil seal a new surface to work with , i managed to fix one side but the other has a slight leak still

have you checked to see if the breather is blocked.
