BEAD LOCK OUTER RING

Hey there wheelers.
Can you help me? I have just bought a set of 15x8 beadlock rockcrawlers. The outer rings are a little bit shot and worse for wear. Previous owners swears they worked and sealed fine but the guys fitting them up dont seem so sure. They are been fitted up today to see how they seal. My questions are if they are relatively straight but a little bent between bolt holes you reckon they should still seal ok? And where are replacement rings available and what would I expect to pay? What bolts you guys prefer using? Some of the holes in the rings I have are a little oval from either bolts snapping or some sort of stress related incident. Cheers

You could use a little smear of silicone to seal them.

Have just received th news that the first rim wont seal to anything over 25psi. :cry: So where too from here? Try again with a "smear" of silicon or just get some new rings? Previous owner is happy to take them back and return moneys but I prefer to keep them and persist. Any ideas on where to get the new rims from?

A lot of those rockcrawlers have very thin locking rings and relatively few (16) mounting bolts meaning they often have a mamimum pressure as low as 20PSI.
More than the maximum pressure and the rings can bend and you start getting leaking issues.
Simple solution run less pressure ;)

H/D tubes. Great idea.
Only used for offroad but driving to and from destination on low pressure doesnt sit comfortably with me. Can rings be made?

Has anyone tried "Slime" to seal small leaks in beadlocks ?






** Slime is the green junk mountain bikers use to combat small punctures etc

why do u want beadlocks over 25psi anyways?

u could try cheezy at CHEEZY RACING on 0397629032 but remember whatever outer rin you buy it will have to be EXACTLYthe same drill hole as the old inner ring.

Redzook they stopped leaking at 25psi inthe water tank. I reckon they might keep leaking pass that point once on the car. Even if they didnt I wouldnt want to drive for an hour on the freeway at 100 on 25psi on the way to a wheeling spot.

Webbie Maybe I could have them redrill the rim ring with a hole in the centre of each existing hole. Doubling them from 16 to 32. Ill try Cheezy thanks.

mud4b excuse my ingnorance but "BBM" ?? Who are they mate?

1.5hours at 70kph?

It would be a fair bit of work to redrill the rims IMHO and you'd still have a pissy thin ring.
If you are going to do anything IMHO get a new thicker ring made that will hold the pressure better.
But be aware beadlock bolts can & do break so I wouldn't go too berko on the pressure even with a thicker ring....And its the reason in another thread I meantioned about using grade 8 bolts.

!.5 hrs @ 70klm's :lol: I suppose,.... little impractical but is a possiblity.
Drilling more holes is something I said on the fly and after thinking about it again probably not viable. I am happy to get some made depending on how deep I need to dig. I would prefer a replacement set but availabilty seems to be a little bit of an issue . I have a few calls to make later this morning still trying to figure out who BBM are though.

id see how they go on the road before going to too much effot, you may only be able to do 50km/h before it gets the vibrations up

Hey Chris,

i had a bit more of a think about your problem, more bolts (to distrubte the load evenly) would be the best solution.

The green slime stuff does work, Dan but silicone works better, with the tyres off.

also, I wouldn't be running these on the road, especially with only 16 bolts holding the tyre on, besides beadlocks are illegal in all states on the road.
Running them is at your own risk, most of us are ok with that although i'd definitely think twice about running dodgy ones.

Ok the update is as follows.
It looks like I either get a set of rings made to match up with the existing holes but from thicker plate.
I am also enquiring about doubling the amount of holes to 32 as there is plenty of room on the inner welded ring to drill another set of holes. I will then have 32 hole outer rings made.
I am not running these on the street except for to and from weekend wheelin spots. I know they are'nt legal. As far as been "dodgy" goes if I persisted with trying to fit the existing warped rings with sealant and or tubes then it would be fairly risky and stupid. But I think I am trying to do things right by asking the guys in the know:wink:.

Too be honest that's what I;d expect with over inflation of the tyres.

Those rings are going to need replacing anyway now really....I mean sure you COULD run them but they'll just leak worse & worse....

You could be right wooders.
Previous owner swears he used to run them at 40 psi with 35 JT 2's.:shock:

Well the previously owner DID over inflate them and probably casued the damage you see (not your 25PSI) adn would explain you they leak......
It would be phyisically possible to un them to 40PSI - but it would damge the bead when it's a relatively thin section held in with only 16 bolts.

Get a new set o rings thickr and wider (toward the cente f the rim) and you should be fine.

KINGS Wheels fitted with mechanical beadlocks from factory.
They have been Identified.
WHere can I get Kings wheels and accessories from any idea?

Kings are the pple that modified the rim to make it into a beadlock. The underlying wheel is (I'm fairly sure) an American Racing 767.
I have the same wheels - and infact they have a sticker inside (ie you can't see it with the tyre inplace) that says "Do not exceed 20PSI" ;)
MThe holes on mine have not elongated like yours but the rings bends a fair bit and mine leak a fair bit - but since I;m running the swampers on them they see hardly any street miles.......
Oh yeah I found the ring reall easy to bend to which has a llowed me to break the bead a few times - I have been considering a new thicker ring - but it's not been a priority lately and I was likely to replace the wheels soon anyway......

From a quick search on the net i found kings 16 hole beadlocks for sale on forums and the like. Couldnt find a Kings site to check but I am sure that these are available from the manufacturer with beadlocks fitted.
You are right about the stickers and psi
I dug up an old pic of your rig and your rims are exactly the same.
Know where I can get replacement rings from?

Those are the beadlocks that G & J were dealing with in their hay day. I endde up with some for the 2001 OBC and found, like you the holes got flogged out and they would leak. The bolts seemed to break on a regular basis also. We had a spacer machined up to fit between the outer and inner ring so the outer had something to teninsion up on to and theat seemed to help lots. As for pressure we used the spare as an air reservoir and at times had 50psi but that wasn't driven on the road. Good luck

How tight did you do up the bolts. Torque of 5 then 10 then 15 lbs has been mentioned. With the washer I reckon thats a great idea as it would spread the load and not tear the sh*t out of the outer. Bolts done tight as poss or torqued? I have also been told that stainless bolts are better cause they flex a bit?

With the spacer, which wqas the thickness of the baed, allowed them to be fairly tight. The spacers may still be around. I'll see if I can locate them.
