Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hey all well the starter motor is playing up in my hzj80 series. it's done 320,000 so don't really blame it. When I turn the key it just makes a click noise, rock it back and forward or tap it with a hammer and it works fine.

So i'd say the contacts have just worn away, whats the best/cheapest option?

Autospark down the road said $250 to remove, service and refit, or $185 just to service it if I take it off and refit it myself

Or.. Should I just check the paper n try get a secondhand one for like $100 and throw that one in?

Also is it possible to learn how to service the starter motor myself?

I have rebuild one out of a 4y lux motor and it cost about $30 for a new plunger and contacts. You will have to take it apart and get the plunger and contacts out and hold them next to the new ones as some have different sizes.
What went wrong with mine was mud got in there and pitted out the contacts. Replace the spring aswell

My toyota service manual (2H) shows how to maintain all of the starter. I have no idea how hard it is to actually do the work though.

The starter itself should go alot longer than 320K, so id be getting it rebuilt. Probably just mud or something has got in there and buggered the contacts etc.

Its easy mate, Im no auto sparky by anyones imagination and i took mine of (2h) changed the contacts re greased the bearings and wacked back in. Run without any probs since.

They're dead easy to do - I replaced the contacts in my 3F starter with contacts I made from some copper I had laying around ( water pipe ) still running happy 2 1/2 years later.
