ok its not 4x4 prob but i need some ideas on what could be my prob as im no expert on boat donks!
the prob is if i prime the bulb and pull start my 15hp Yamaha it starts and runs fine but after a while it starts to studder and then stalls! i can then primer it again and with the choke will start but then stalls again soon after! the primer bulb sucks itself in! so, would this then mean theres a blockage in line or something worse? when its not on the motor it seems to pump itself up with fuel nice and solid but when the motors running it again colapses! please any help to fix this prob would be a godsend as its already stuffed a beut day i had planned for me kids before they go back to school! thanks in advance blokes!

check the vent on the tank so it can suck air

I agree, sounds like a vent problem. Try running it for a short while with the fuel cap loosened.

It is obviosly a fuel delivery problem.
As the others said
filters 1 in tank 1 before carby somewhere
Cracked fuel line sucking air
Just start by passing things untill you find it
I find the best time to test outboards is between 10pm and 2 am

ok i thinks i got it! the fitting that goes into the tank is the same as what goes to the motor and the ball bearing on the fitting pushes back but does not push this pin thing in thats on the tank fitting wich allows fuel to come out! so to combat this i twisted, cut, broke then drilled the crappers out of the whole fitting on the tank only just smaller than the thread on a screw in barb fitting then hamerd a barb in with this thread lock stuff on it all the way in then just conected the hose straight to it with a hose clamp! ill try it out in the morn! thanks heaps for the sugestions gentlemen!

Err, Umm, speaking of fuel delivery hoses, you do have it on the correct way, dont you? Look for the arrow on the bulb. It points toward the motor, not the fuel tank.

Sounds like a typical Yamaha outboard. I am on my second one and they have both been the same.

My previous motor was a low houred 1998 25HP Yamaha CV (2 stroke) and I currently have a 2004 40HP Yamaha with approx 150 hours on it. Both motors are always difficult to start unless you prime them almost to the extent that the hose feels ike it is about to bust. Once started they would never idle properly despite several trips to mechanics for services and tuning etc.
IMHO a Mariner/Mercury is the only way to go. I owned a 1990 Mariner 2 stroke which had an absolute caning with many trips to NT and the Cape floating around in trailers and the backs of utes which never missed a beat and started first go every time. It was submerged three times and after removing the spark plugs and pumping the water out and draining the carby it fired up every time no dramas. I have a few mates with them, one is a pro fisherman in the Gulf and he swears by Mariners.
Although Yamaha has a good name, in my experience, the Mercury/Mariner is a far better motor.

mate if you are in the market for a outboard you are thinking of the right one when you say tohatsu because the tohatsu is just the commercial version of a mercury and mariner all the same in the 2 strokes ,except cowling and colour. If you are after a 4 stroke i wouldn't look past the suzuki 4 strokes, best warranty etc.. and meet the 06 protocol for emmissions

Yeah thats what i was told last year. I am concerened about dealer backup with tohatsu, as ive heard that they arent the best. Also with merc, you can get parts anywere and everwhere. I wonder if tohatsu parts are actually the same even though they build the powerheads for mercury. Im only chasing a 15 hp.
thanks guys

mate i have a 9.9 tohatsu and also a 200 mercury the parts for both are relatively easy to get. the 15 horsepower is actually more expensive than the 18 horse tohatsu..

At our surf life saving club, we have gone from Johnno to Mercury to Tohatsu in the space of about 13 - 14 years. The Mercs were great especially top end and were reliable but cavitated too much during tight manouvers. We have had 3 tohatsu's now and they all rock!!! No hassles with them and we thrash them. (Granted we warm them up forst and flush them every day)
The 30Hp Toy is just a 25 with a restriction in the inlet. Swap for a $5 gasket and bang, u have 30HP
