MQ tachometer L28

I've bought a orginal tachometer for my MQ. But when I installed it it didn't work. The wiring was already there so it was plug and play.
Do I need more parts to make it work? Or is it just broken. The Nissan manual wiring diahgram says that there also is a "tachometer-resistor". Does my '84 MQ L28 without a tachometer have this resistor?

The resistor from memory is a plug in module in the wiring loom near the coil. I'll try and find it tonight on mine and take a photo.

L28 tacho is 3 wires.
2 wires go through the resister ( small silver box ) that screws on the back of the instument cluster, they then plug into the nissan wiring loom.
The other wire is the signal feed wire.
if plugs into the negative side of the ignition coil itelf.
if you want to test your tacho just sit it in the engine bay and grab the wire that runs down the to coil ( i think its a black one ) and put it on the negative on the coil and see what happens.... then plug one wire on ur positive on ur batter and the other on ur negative, with all 3 wires giving you power, earth and signal your tacho should work just sitting it in the engine bay.... if it all works then u plug it in and it does, you have a problem with the wiring....
with which case i have just told u how to wire it, so just run an ignition power, and earth and a cable through the dash and firewall out to the negative on the coil.....
problem solved.

I know you've got it working, but I promised to post a photo.
That thing taped to the wire in the centre of the photo is the tacho resistor module on my MK. A wire on the plug end broke and the tacho stopped working, which is why it's now taped up.
