V6 OR V8 CONVERSION

just want ppls opinion on wether a holden v6 ( VS or newer - 175kw) or an old holden V8 would be a good idea to convert into a fj62 cruiser?

I was wondering that too....the old V8 would have to be easier because the bits'n'pieces would be simpler. The V6 would be better on fuel and would be readily available from wreckers. Adaptors for the g/box could determine which is easiest....

V6 IMO would be a bit small for a 60#
as for a V8 i wouldn't go anything smaller than a 308. they aren' light cars

i have just done a 253 in my hilux it cost me no more than 650 for the hole lot 253 has more low down power than a 308 i know this because i have driven a 308 in a hilux your car my be a bit more heaver than mine but it will cost you half the price than a v6 will by the time you buy all of the things to put it in and parts will be a lot cheaper. and even going thorugh water and bog holes it hasnt stoped yet because the dizzy is at the back of the motor it is almost impossable to get to, but if you have the cash commo v6 would be good

You don't want to do the V6, it's way too small. 253 will only have more low down power than a 308 if the 308 isn't tuned properly or has a problem. A 253 by it's nature will have less power and torque across the whole rev range to an equivelantly equiped 308, no if's or but's.
Ideally look at a chev. 350's a becoming more common now as a lot of people are tending to gen III instead. A stock chev will give you enough torque to keep you smiling. A stock 308 will make you wonder if it was all worth it just for the exhaust note!

When you are talking about pushing around the weight of a 60 then there is no substitute for cubic inches. Basically, forget the V6. Ever hear of anyone swapping in a V6 into a landcruiser? There is a reason!

there is a 262 chev v6 is a 4.3 ltr they rev good make good power you can get a vortex injected one or an older one carby or just go 350 cant bet cubes

thats true ruffy but then you have to look a all the costs involed i cant see a 350 being all that cheap I WOULD LOVE IT THOE before i did mine i had to way it up and the old v8s where alot cheaper but if you are driving this car all the time id say 350 as well i dont drive mine all that as ive got 2 others, ive heard people going staght gas? more power? or less ?

yeah nup,
Go bigger, I have a307 in my 40s and I can't imagine going to all that trouble for a smaller engine regardless. If you have the coin go injected.
I think you will have trouble finding a conversion kit for a V6 into a landcruiser. They weren't supplied with small engines for a reason as said above.
350 chev would be my engine choice.

With a little head work and a nice cam the little 308 gets up and goes well .
I run a dual fuel setup and I use the 4by every day towing a trailer.
On gas I get 17lts per 100kms and on fuel 13.5lts per 100 kms towing a trailer and my road tires are 35's.
But for the 60 series I'd go the 350 for it has effortless low down torque standard, and behaves well to mods (as any V8 does) .
I'd do the swap just for the exhaust note too

hg what car is this motor in ?
i have a 308 in my 75 ute running 35/s and i'm lucky to get below 30l per 100k running a rochester carby

Cost is obviously a major consideration here so i don't think a supercharged V6, a Turbo XR6 or head work on the 308 are wise options.... Either the 350 or injected 5 litre are going to be the cheapest decent power if they're not in the budget then think about wether or not you really need to do this or wait until a decent 308 turns up.. you'll regret rushing in and plonking in a shaggy 308 or 253.

Mine is a Holden 308 dual fuel with R151 5speed & 4.88 diffs.
This is all in a 91 Surf, I tune the puppy myself (I'm always tinkering) and also I run a Rochester carby as well with a Holley blue pump and the gas setup is an Impco.
I use the 4by for work every day and on weekends it's offroad time.
I'm very happy with the motor combo and the fuel economy too, the only real problem I've had is in the clutch department as I have been ripping the centres clean out of the clutches (3 now in 2 1/2 years). Now I'm running a solid 5 finger clutch and all seems good.

why dont you go a 5lt injected windsor with f150 manifold heaps of torque you can pick them up from 700 marks adaptors do a kit for this engine use your toyota box

i've just had my 308 worked ported heads flat top pistons and new cam.
and the torque is awsome. it's hard to stop in 1st gear high with the breaks. plus it still revs hard.
and sounds wicked doing so.

I would use a Chev before a Holden V8 for the torque alone
Chev
350 = 3.5" stroke x 4" bore
327 = 3.25" stroke x 4" bore
305 = 3.50" stroke x 3.75" bore
307 = 3.25 stroke x 3.7/8" bore
A 350 Chev with around a 270 duration cam will produce about 320 HP
Holden
308 = 3.1" stroke x 4" bore
253 = 3.1" stroke x 3 5/8 bore

A mate of mine has a v6 commodore motr on his 60 and it halls ass. He tows a large boat with it no problems. Does long trips and it revs hard.
