Cost of a/c compressor on GQ

hey all...
got my a/c re-gassed and it seems to be leaking from my compressor. Got quoted $500 for the compressor (new) and $200 to install.
Wondering if anybody has similar quotes or know of where to buy a cheaper new or reco compressor? Im in the melbourne area.

Thats sounds about right for a new one, I got quoted up to $800 from one place.
If its just the seal, which if its ur compressor, 99% of the time it will be. Take the compressor out yourself and find someone to fit a new seal, seal cost is about $10. Refit the compreesor yourself then get someone to gas it.
Just make sure that they put oil back in it. The most time consuming bit is getting the compressor out.

have you or anybody else ever done a seal kit in one of theses? Couldnt be too hard? anyone ever ran into any problems?

I didnt do it myself, I didnt have the time but my dad did it for me, I dont think its to hard if you have some mech know how

Buy a GQ book and do it yourself. A proper Dealer manual, it spells everything out simple and easy... FYI the oil is in the a/c gas.
Also you can have the a/c people put a dye in the gas, its ultra violet, and means you can go buy a black light from the $2 shop and go over your 4B yourself and find the leak.. if you want to save money that is (I know money isn't growing out of my [donkey] ).

just to correct this, the oil is not in the Refrigerant, the oil is in the compressor, but when your compressor runs it does pump the oil around the system, so if you have alot of refrigerant leaks, or, you spill the oil out while removing/replacing the seal, take it to a guy and have the oil replaced, and regassed,

depends if you have the sanden compressor or the other (think it is bosch ) $480 for the sanden and $390 for the other type.

Can someone tell me where to buy an a/c compressor in Melbourne? The couple of places I rang wanted $499 for a reco one and upto $1200 for a new one
plus fitting...
Its an '89 GQ TD42.
The air con bloke who had it today told me that mine is stuffed and not worth fixing, but he can't get the parts before Christmas (but he will fix it for me on Saturday if I can source the compressor).
How do I confirm if mine is a Bosch or Sanden type? - are they easily recognisable? (yes I forgot to ask the air con bloke...
)
I saw a post recently about another donor Nissan car from a wreckers, but I'm stuffed if I can find it......

My Fridgy was able to source a new seal for my diesel kiki(bosch) 89TD42
compressor for about $60 from memory, i installed it and he replaced the oil and gassed it up for me.
seal didn't come with the o ring for the compressor housing, which i had to source seperately.
