Soft-topping a swb 40?

How much work involved in chopping a 40 series swb down? How much unbolts and how much needs cutting. What's the regulations relating to this?
I've got a mate who is interested......

No chopping required
Take the rear/tailgate window off first to make it lighter
Undo the bolts around tub and windscreen, then lift off
You have to lift pretty high as there are 2 "poles" in the rear of the door pillar (just behind the door handles)
Two man lift. Should take no more than about 1 hr.
Then pop in a nice little cage

then a 9" grinder thought the press makes and it is a load lighter.

In QLD the only thing it will need is a LH8 code inspection to check out the seat belts and roll cage. The rest is classed as a factory option.
Depending upon your understanding of the rules you can remove teh doors as well and drive without them. I drove mine to the inspection station without them and they Inspctor had no problems with it as they bolt on and could be removed with the hard top.
Depending on year you may need to cut teh rear doors or make a one piece tail gate.

Wonder what's required for a roll cage?

rollcage is not nesesary, but somewhere to attach your lapsash seatbelt is, UNLESS your swb came out with factory lap only belts like an early 70's model, then all you need is the origional belts, no cage.
As for the seatbelt mount on the rollcage, the hole that the bolt goes through must be sleeved with a steel sleve and welded in place.
doors are not nessesary either.

Not much really. A main hooped, couple of braces all bolted into the body with plates . Sleeve the seat belt bolts and use new seat belts and 8.8 grad 7/16 UNF bolts.
You can usually pick them up from the wreckers pretty easy. If you get a factory one it doesn,t need to be plated.

rollcage is not nesesary
This depends which state you live in. Check your local requirements. I know that in the NT you must have some form of roll over protection when converting a landcruiser from hardtop to softop. I'm not sure for other states but suggest you check local requirements.

But I was expecting to go back to him and say "Nah it's too hard. You'd be better off buying one already converted."

Besides - you don't actually do any work yourself on you cars do you
Actually I thought why ask one person when I can ask a whole forum. I also plan to be on the phone to you when I do it.
