Hi guys WTF My BFG's are slowing leaking how do I maintain bead lock??
Have only had them since feb 06 approx... And after a few mud bog trips they are slowly leaking even in the bush seen bubbles coming from the bead area!!!
Luckily I have n air comp and pump them to 40psi they then seem to stop leaking...
What would be the best way of preventing this from always happening?
Can u high pressure hose clean the bead area by deflating the tyre and concentrate around the rim bead area...Or get a tyre place to take of reseat and perhaps I heard of some sealant???? Or pour petrol over zook and burn it to the ground...Sorry just a bit peed off.. Does this occur all the time?
Thanks in advance

FWIW, my BFG muddies (getting close to 100,000km no   ) have suddenly started rapidly deflating seemingly at random :? :? . I pump 'em back up and they're fine again for a couple of months.... :? :?

Try running them at higher pressure (30-35PSI) for a bit to see if you can get 'em to seat properly and stick. How old are your rims? Maybe you may have to take 'em off and clean up the rims a bit if they're aging??

It is probably just dirt and stuff stuck in your bead either take it too a tyre shop and get them to clean it out and reseat or you can do it yourself, I did it myself, wouldn't bother again though Id just get a pro to do it.

Yeh, mine do the same. take it to a shop and get it cleaned and reseated. You could use finny leak, but than the tyre shop will hate you.

when playing in mud and water, mud and dirt can get into the bead area very easily.

if you are running lower pressures then you do on road, than the problem can get worse.

in your avatar, you are in a rut or on a side angle, this 'folds' the tyre under, and exposes the bead more, so therefore letting the dirt in. and whenyo are back on road, this will cause the leak.

pumping them up harder forces the tyre against the rim harder, so the leak eventually stops. also, it usually only happens on the outside of the tyre, and if you want, pull the core out of the valve, and hi lift the outside bead off, clean up, silastic, and back on. you wont need to take the tyre off the rim at all. just break the bead, and re-seat it after you've cleaned it.

Thats what I did. Fixed my bead problem that i'd had for a while.
Second trip after getting the tubes fitted I got a puncture!
I sold the tyres soon after that.
So yes a tube will prevent mud etc getting into the bead but will not stop you getting a puncture.
Pros and cons for either way i guess.

They are new rims new tyres but have the same random problem leak then pumpem up no leaks for ages all random . So BFG tyres on rims are subject to when letting tyres down for off road and getting mud in them they will lose bead lock.... tnx for the reply AJFeroza

SiKiD_01 your right playing in the mud and ruts is going to open the gap for crap to get in...

mistaboz what type of puncture was it...a stick in tread or rubbing against the walls...cause if thats the case I will do the sikaflex or similar to bead lock it

A stick.

I reckon the"rim protectors" on BFG cause too many probs. Mud, small sticks etc get stuck in there and cause loss of seal against the rim.

I personally wouldn't use a tube in my tyres, as you run the risk of rapid deflation if you get a puncture. Only my opinion!

it is just dirt in the bead if you go to a good tyre shop they will clean it out for you
try to stay out of mud but if you cant the tyre shop can put a liquid rubber around the rim for you it helps a lot to hold the tyre in place especialy with bfgs

PK is my dad and a guy in our club had the newer ones with the bead protection and used to have so many problems with sticks and mud and crap just getting stuck in there because when the wheels are spinning it acts like a bowl when the tyres are at lower pressures to on road!

so what i can understand of this is that they are a crap tyre

Thanks every body for your replies will post my outcome after I have had them reseated and cleaned.... If they stop leaking whilst not playing in the mud.. Then there is issues with these tyres... Might put the sealant stuff in or may go tubes... Hate pumping the tyres up every day!!

I had two tyres constantly doing this.
Fixed with simex heavy duty tubes, never had a problem since.

best to drill out the valve holes and fit the optional valve protector, too.

It just stops the valve stem from wearing where it comes thru the rim.
You can run the tubes without it, but I had one tear (the others been fine?)
So upon fitting new tube I drilled out the hole, slipped in the plastic ring (comes with tube)..But have not had any probs with the others, but if I do I'll fit the protector.
Couldn't find a useful web site.
I buy them from Dynamic in Rowville (Chris Hummer is the man) He is on OL but not regularly.

I'll take a photo of mine if camera worx that close

thanks for that ,christover its seems that mud tires are nopt mud tires untill they are fitted properly

I reckon the simex heavy duty tubes are a poor mans bead lock on something as light as a zook.
I was worried about tubes, but after 2 Adventure Tours with them, I no longer worry. My other 2 tyres are still tubeless, till needed, then will be tubed.

I may have lead you up the garden path OOPs.
I don't think simex hd tubes go any smaller than 31's

I not sure if I'd want normal tubes off road, but other tube makers may do hd?

Maybe ya rims are a bit dicky?

Some people even glue the tyres on with sikaflex.

We used finelic (sp) in motorbikes, it fixed all minor leaks successfully, but never tried it in 4wd's.
