Hi All,
Just wondering if you people know if the fans are ment to come on when the air con is turned on?

I have only ever heard the fans come on once and that was a 42dec day towing a camper:?

Ive been told that if I earth the temp switch on the thermostat housing it sould turn the fans on, but no.

Have I got the right switch? There are two, front and rear. With front if I earth it the air con compresser pully locks in....but no fan action.

The one at rear....I cant get anything out of it exept a kind of "clunk" sound towards the passeger side of the Disco...maybe the ecu or relay ???....

Is there an easy way of testing either fans or temp switch?

Or any ideas would be great thanks.

From memory:

The fans should turn on when the air con is on.

There are 2 temp switches at the thermostat housing. They have different set points.

The lower temp one, senses high temp and turns the fans on if the air con is off.

The higher temp one, de-energises the compressor clutch (turns off air con), if the air con is on.

This is what I have found, but different years may be different.

Disconnect fan, Put a multimeter across the plug pins from the vehicle side. Turn aircon on (make sure fan is on aswell) and place your ignition in the run position. You should get 12volts. More likely fan is stuffed. Just replaced one of mine with one from the wreckers as I want to give rebuilding one a shot.

Ive also since found out that the fans on my Disco (12/97) arent ment to come on until the coolant is at 100dec A bit late in my book.....but I will try your tip and see what the go is.

We are heading off to Beachport SA on Monday morning, so I hope to get a chance to test them again by then.

Well Cookie....I have done what you said and one plug I have 12.6v and other I have 12.1v.

Whats the best way to put 12v into the fans and make them run, so Im sure they are ok?

They should be kicking in if you have the 12 volts there so I'm thinking they are stuffed.

To run power through them you'll need to connect to battery. I did it (VERY carefully) by using two small screwdrivers (could be anything small enough to fit in plug) in a set of jumper leads and touched the pins. They will either spin which could just mean the plug needs a good cleanup or they wont and are dead. Be careful not to touch the screwdrivers together unless you want to weld! Don't forget to secure the fan as when they kick in they will move and you could end up touching screwdrivers together!

Since found that fans are stuffed, tested with temp wires and terminals etc....also had a mate test them (motor I think) and he said yep there stuffed.......looks like it isnt going to be to hot for the trip.....

No probs. Just fitted a snorkel to my Disco after 2 and a half years and we have been cut off from the outside world by flooding since 1am Saturday.

Yeah I saw that your under at the mo....are you ok ? any majar fllooding at your place?

Yeah main highway has opened now, town itself was OK other than about 10 houses got a few centremetres through them.

Anyone planning on travel to northern SA or Flinders Ranges will want to postpone though!

Couple of weeks could be a good time to head to the salt lakes as they fill though!
