Why is a tube notcher necesarry as opposed to just a vice and drill press?
My logic is use a metal hole saw the same size as the tube you are connecting and get it centred and locked with a vice. Drill through and it should fit snuggly, right?

thats right.... and if you only have one cage or tray or what ever to build then do it that way. But a notcher will give you the angles and do the job in less time with less fuss. I bought one and it kicks arse.

You don't need a notcher. I've built 2 trays, sliders and roll cages and I haven't used a notcher. Just use an angle grinder with a cutting disc and cut the pipe with 2 straight cuts on about a 30 degree angle so the end of the pipe is pointed. It isn't too hard to do. It does get a little tricky when you are joining on a tight angle or at a junction of 3 pipes. That's where a grinding disc is very useful. And MIG stands for Metal In Gaps lol
