SD33T boost up?

Post by floody »

G'day,
My partner's old man just bought a SD33T Patrol.
I've been mucking about with my skyline modding things and will soon have a small intercooler, turbosmart boost tap and a boost gauge all surplus to my needs, which I was thinking might go well on the patrol.

But I am totally inexperienced with diesels so haven't got any idea where to start.

What sort of boost level can you run without touching anything else? Turbo has very little play, it blows very little smoke, revs quite freely etc, so I imagine the motor and fuel system is pretty healthy.

Later on I guess we could look at maybe installing my old skyline intercooler (was thinking top mounted with a small bonnet vent), and of course an EGT gauge.
But for now we'd just like to play around without causing any longevity issues.

If the intake manifold has a relief valve, You can block off the wastegate and run off the factory releif vavle. Mine does this and is noisy when it blows. Best mod i did was a 3 inch mandrel straight through. IS unreal.

How is the noise with the 3" system? Is it from the turbo back or from the dump pipe - dump looks incredibly restrictive stock on those things.

Might try blocking off the wastegate but my logic tells me it would be more accurate in terms of boost control to block the pop-off valve and use the 'gate for regulating pressure?

I think the dump is only 2.5 " but i got a 3 inch and it works well.

Yeah the factory relif probably aint the best way, But its the cheapest, easyies and the quickest.

Mine will still accerlerate with the blow off in full operation, Not just like it did b4 it came on. I think they work between 6 -11 psi . It will do the job till you get the job sorted properly.

Also running vege oil in the diesel improves power and fuel consumption. IM ove rthe 1000 km mark and that includes a 600 km return trip to pick up a MQ ute for a project. Id say i could get almost 1300-1500 in the right conditions and all for about $50 .

Cold start up is a major PITA. ill do a build thread when i finish the conversion toa std im happy with.

Cheers
