You can, my tacho sites on the A pillar. But you need either a fuel pump mod to run the tacho or get an adaptor that sits on the back of the Alternator.
If you can find the adaptor for teh alt, it would be the cheapest setup.

My tacho uses the alternator.

I just put a VDO tacho in my 70 series. The switches at the back allowed for 4,6 or 8cyl petrol or had a whole lot of settings for pulses / rev for diesels. I'm not sure if they all have that though

with a petrol you can take the signal from the distributor or crank angel sensor etc.

with a 1HDT you dont have these features.

Only way is to fit a sensor to the fuel pump or altenator or flywheel.

1HD-T fuel pump already has a sensor so if you can find a tach like the VDO with a control for pulses per rev, you can make it work - just a case of foiguring out how many teeth on the wheel in the pump (I don't know!)
