1hd-t power help

hi guys , got a 1hdt in a 60 series and wanting a bit more power?....im starting to make a bigger turbo dump pipe and a 3inch exhaust system,egt guage and fitted a k&n filter...
what else can i do without spending thousands and keeping it reliable?boost, fueling? intercooling?
also its not a wagon that sees loads of mud etc ,its more for camping and towing the bush truck...

I havn't got much info for you sorry mate, but any chance of some pics??
Intercooling helps by letting the engine get cooler, denser air.
Larger injectors would allow you to pump more fuel into the combustion chamber.
I know the later 1HDT's are EFI which means you can just reprogram the computer for more power.

Ditch the K&N and put a real filter on it before you kill your engine first dirt road.

quick60 on here has an intercooled hdt in his 60....you are on the right track, get a large dump and 3 inch at least through to the back, then look for a fuel pump called a "walbro" which is a 7psi pump that electrically pumps the diesel up to and through the filters....after the filter tee off the pump so it only needs to suck from the filter not the tank....return the fuel back to tank the usual way.
This will make a big difference (ask him or tobie (with a hdft 75) how much) because your fuel lines were not designed for a hdt, so the pump will run retarded without the helper....
Thirdly, get an intercooler off ebay...something like a std supra one...and mod it to fit ...well worth the money....makes the motor last longer, and you can then boost further.

1HDT isnt fuel injected.... your thinking of the 1HDTFE from 79/78/100 series....
as suggested 3" dump and exhaust, fit and intercooler and egt gauge and tune for a post turbo EGT of 500C should make plenty of power and be reliable for a long time. You can push the EGT up round 550 at the expense of fuel economy and longevity.... also consider changing all your bigend bearings to ACL to prevent costly failure

as said before, fuel lines for sure, make sure you get enough fuel up to your pump
start by repacling your bearings and timing belt (good practice to do these every 100k)
3" exhaust, no mufflers (some people say mufflers but the 4.2 TD's dont need them)
setup a nice front mount intercooler (should be able to make your own setup for $500 max)
next thing is to take it to a popular(and good) dyno tuner, up the boost a bit and wind that pump
you will find that the stock 1HDT injectors will handle alot morepower than your pump and turbo can throw at them,so they are fine
turbo is good for around 15psi AFAIK
with an intercooled 14-15psi and a nice setting on the pump should be pushing 140+ wrhp, of your dyno tuner is good

will a holley 97GPH pump do the job they run@ 7psi and have a built in reg?
and i obviously wire the elec pump to the ign?

Only if you want the turbo to start shedding blades !!!
13 psi MAXIMUM for the DT turbo.

Don't know about the holley pump, would have to check the flow rates to make sure it will deliver the right amount of fuel.
I've just sold my 60 with a 1HDT in it, it has a Safari front mount intercooler, 3 1/2" dump pipe and 3" exhaust with a straight through muffler. The dump pipe and exhaust will see some good gains, most noticeable in the spool up of the turbo earlier. Without a muffler it will be too loud and will annoy you, either way it will need re-tuning after the exhaust to see any real gains. I had around 125 rear wheel KW & that's through an 8% overdrive in the transfer gears and 35" tyres. I've replaced it with a 100 series turbo diesel and the old 60 leaves the new one for dead. The Walbro pusher pump ($200) is a good option and I had one. If you haven't already, you will need to put a bigger pickup in the tank and run a 12mm fuel supply line to whatever filter you are running and the inj. pump, and use the original 6mm line as the return line. This will give you a lot more mid rpm power as the pump tends to starve a bit under full acceleration in this range.

a fair bit of work involved, but well worth the effort with around a 32% increase in torque gained after a re-tune. Then go and get yourself a $200 K-Mart cruise control and sit back and enjoy the ride.
