OK - not 4x4, but I think one of these engines was used in the 4-runner...
A mate of mine has a 1994 camry with 150k on the clock, and has just blown the motor - big end, no. 1 piston, etc... I have 2 questions for anyone who knows:
(1) is this engine a 3VZ-FE or a 1MZ-FE ???
(2) what is the best source for another motor? wreckers? jap import???

(1) 3VZ-FE - 3ltr 24 Valve EFI
(2) Wreckers should be able to help you although you might like to get a price on a Gem or similar exchage reconditioned engine that would come with a decent warranty. It will be an expensive option though.

Thanks a lot - I found some info saying that 94 was the changeover - but must have been us/japan only.

Yeah as far as I know its as follows:

VZV21 : 06/88 to 02/93 : 2VZ-FE 2.5ltr EFI V6 24 Valve (older square shape)
VDV10 : 03/93 to 08/97 : 3VZ-FE 3.0ltr EFI V6 24 Valve (Wide Body)
VCV10 : 08/95 to 09/95 : 3VZ-FE 3.0ltr EFI V6 24 Valve (Wide Body)
MCV20R: 08/97 to 02/03 : 1MZ-FE 3.0ltr EFI V6 24 Valve (Updated shape)

Thanks Ray.
Looks like a good 2nd hand engine is around the $1600 mark. A Gems engine is around $4k.

Apparently it just started running rough and making lots of noise while he was driving. It has managed to do a big-end bearing at the front of the engine - and a couple of other related things. The engine was overheated in the past and has had the head done as a result - may be related...

You will replace the car for the same money or less.

I know, but it isn't my car and so isn't my decision...
