GQ V8 Conversion Exhaust Question

Hey Turkeys
Just Fitted my Chev 383 Stroker to my SWB using one of marks adaptors, I'm using Hugger style extractors, my question is, how have others run the exhaust on the Drivers side down past the gearbox as there is very little room due the front tail shaft?
Any help or Pics would be great?

hey bignuts,
you should cross over the pipe before the tailshaft to the passenger side.

You can cross over kind of beneath the sump and just in front of the bell housing and it is reasonably protected. The comp truck I navi in has got this set up and it works really well as far as I have seen so far. Could try and get a pic in the next day or two if you need it?

make sure you heatsheild the pipe if you cross over beneath the sump.

Why is this nessacary? What can the heat from the exhaust damage down there?

nothing too important, only engine oil temperature ;P

Have you found that your oil temperatures get high with the exhaust in that position jes?
My dad has a 350 in his and does not seem to experence high oil temperatures in his with the exhaust running by the sump, neither has a mate with a 383 in his.
Im currently fitting the exhaust on mine which has a holden 304 and will be running in between the sump and the front of the bell housing, to be on the safe side i may heat sheild it if others have experenced high oil temperatures due to that exhaust path.

if you put the exhaust close to something without a heat sheild, it will heat it up. Run your pipes up under your feet and see if you can step on the floor. ( even with all the airflow in the world) an SBC ( or any large capacity engine) develops alot of heat in the header pipes, ESPECIALLY at the radius's of pipe bends.
you wont notice the temps unless you have an oil temp guage.
For the 2 mins and .30 cents worth of gal sheetmetal it takes to make the sheild, it is worth doing even if it saved 5 degree's of heat soak getting int o the sump oil.
