Outer Limits 4x4 Board

my dad just bought a mavGQ 92 model, carby, 4.2ltr

and when the clutch is in (when changing gear) and when the car has stopped the idle drops down to idle after about 5 seconds,

just wanting some advice on what maybe the problem?





p.s and no where not buying a toyota

Vaccuum leak, maybe?

They got a booster on the clutch cylinder I think, may be a hose or the booster.

its wierd, coz if it was the carby, it should happen all the time,
i thought a vacum somewhere, as it only does it when the clutch is in and idles down to where it should after 5 seconds when you stop,

it has us stuft at the moment,

Are you sure its only with clutch in? Have you tried just putting it into neutral and taking your foot off the clutch to see if it still does it? If it does (I am pretty sure it will) check and lubricate the linkages for the accelerator cable and choke cable at the carby. If you get your old man to simulate the problem while you are watching the carby see if the accelerator cable linkage on the carby retracts all the way or if its dragging towards the end of its stoke. Check the return springs are not slack too.

Most late model "emission" carbies have a "dash pot" to prevent the throttle from closing too quickly (high revs with closed throttle = super lean mixture = high NOx (I think...))

Check your dashpot to see it it's a little sticky - NFI how you'll know what's normal.

Yeah what Scott said, it's designed to burn of any unburnt fuel before idle, the last couple of petrol cars had dashpots and I couldn't get the spanners out fast enough to de-adjust -stinking things they are , makes city and offroad driving a piddling marathon of extra concentration.
You probably will not know how extra nice it is to not have it (if it has one) until it's gone.

this could be a bit silly but maybe the idle speed adjuster knob thing, located near the steering wheel?

in the work truck we had this prob, and all it was that somone adjusted the idle speed up from the in cab adjuster!!!

we have played with the idle, its back to where it was now
and the dash throttle is all the way in,

it does it when we are driven and put the clutch in to change gears, the rev's stay at 1900rpm's, and once we stop it takes about 5 seconds for it to go back to normal idle,

this is a 92 model, carby, would it have dashpot

and we have sprayed all the links with wd40, thinking it was a sticking arm or something simular

where is the dash pot located?

It could be the Hi speed idle cam gettin stuck then coming down a little late. Its a pretty common problem for the carby motors. Just needs a bit of a spray with teflon or something and she should be right.

problem fixed, alot a stuffing around, we took the dash pot off, the shaft in that had stuck, put some oil on the shaft, and got it to move again, put it back together and it has fixed it,
