Modified vehicles; unless there is a factory vehicle that competes with the modified ones in some aspects of off road driving.

define CAPABLE !!!!

can it drive from brizvegas to mexico ???
can it ford a 2m deep river ???
can it climb over rocks the size of a school bus ???
can it fit in all tracks around Oz ???
(fit in ruts , between trees etc... )

so many variables !!!!!
so many options !!!!!

Pete Antunac,s FJ 40....
Sam,s Strange Rover ....
Glenn Dobbin,s FJ 45 ....
Cheezy,s Mav .....
the list goes on !!!!!!! :D

I see the definition of capable as being the most versatile vehicle. I.e. it can travel on the greatest range of terrain, although not necessarily quickly.

What about the boat/car that was in the news a few months back...

your really going to have to narrow this down if you want serious responses

I don't see how the Holden Cruz could really be defined as versatile but I see your point with the Boat/Car thing.
How about the most capable vehicle for offroad terrain; whether that be rockcrawling or mud or dirt or anything.
I'm really just after the most capable vehicle over the widest variety off offroad terrain.

What makes the Holden Cruz so capable?
As far as I can see it does relatively few things extremely well. It simply does not have the versatility of even an umodified Jimny or Patrol etc.

The Cruz is a joke, dude

I'd say the top five are:
Overkill Zuk
Antanac's 40
Strange Rover
Dobson's 45
Cheezy's Mav

Not necessarily in that order ;)

mine will do that but so will hundreds of others, its set up to do trips like the simpson desert and capeyork and then do things like manar rocks and ASCC.
doesnt means it does anything in particular exceptionally well, just anything reasonably well.

Have any of you guys driven an Aussie Army UNI MOG. They are very capable. Spent a few years in some crap vehicles but offroad they are hard to beet. A little large for tight tracks but will ford unprepaird about 2ms go backwards at about 90ks have diff locks super low rnge & will carry a toyota when they break down. :finger: :finger: :D

all cool rigs, but cheezy hasn't driven his yet, it might be a dog!
I am sure he wouldn't be comparing it with such esteemed competition untill he actually knows how it drives.

yep, a mate kinda collects the things. they go awesome, but a bit heavy, and they get a bit cranky on big vertical stuff.

Dobsons 45 without a doubt in my mind, followed very closely by Sams BEAST.

Put those to trucks together in close proximity of each other and you have my version of heaven

But for pure stock out of the car dealer I have to go with any of the old Range Rovers, I dont think a more capable stock 4wd has been made since them, though most of them are pretty damn close in capability outta the yard.

Restricting to 4x4's (ie no tracked veichles or other "devices"), then those listed are certainly leading the pack.....I think PeteK's yella TJ would have been in there too - but it's no longer......

There are others no doubt - just lower profile.

Best "fatory"...bugger I wish they'd bring the bloody Jeep Rubicon out here :bad-words:

for an all round rig, i'd agree with big red and say that his rig is a good 'all-around' rig that can both perform touring duties, as well as mix it with the hardcore stuff :)

very broad question, i think one of the mos capable STOCK vehicles of all time, was the Toyota 80 series, dual lockers optional, 33s optional, wide, steady, coiled, pretty good offroad, too expensive, but yeah twin diff locks from factory has gotta be better than most, particularly with the offroad suspension yopu could buy, you would be sore, in the wallet, but capable!

Diff Locks are cheating :finger:
And all the optional shit is available for the RR just not outta the factory.

optional stuff is available for a triton too, whats your point. :finger:

Straight out of the box you would be hard pressed to go past a GWagen. Diesel, auto, front and rear lockers.

Stock Sierras are also amazingly capable for a wide variety of 4wheeling. Can be driven on the street, can do long trips somewhat comfortably, great in the sand and snow, great on bush tracks as they can skate over obstacles that bigger cars get stuck in, easy to recover.

I find it strange to see the custom trucks above mentioned, as they all seem to only suit the rock crawling, winch type events,

As far as a general Capable rig, an allrounder, surpriced people haven't suggested things like:

Trent Leens GQ
Mike Smiths Rangie etc.

heaps more similar, but both these have done Ateco, Outback etc, Mike did hte Tuff Truck in his rangie.

Good fast allrounders, you could tour just about anywhere in Australia, and compete in just about any event, may not win the likes of tufftruck, but will fair ok in it.

Just a thought....

I would settle with Dobsons truck for any situation :D
Its well engineered and apparently very easy to drive :)

Sorry Sam...... I like your truck too ;)

No One mentioned Birdy's Nissan does well in the winch challenges

is prob more of an all rounder than some of the trucks listed here

Just about any of the outback challenge trucks would be up there too
