Pinging
I presume that if you are all having to run high octane fuel that there must be something wrong with all your engines? Surely none of the cars you've mentioned would have been tuned / built to run on a high octane fuel would they? I know that a lot of japanese cars are built to do so, but when you got your cars new, they wouldn't have pinged right?
I got the timing adjusted on my old 1.3 and got rid of the pinging... With that done and a rebuilt carby my little workhorse was going great guns til it starting smoking

I believe (Being Japanese and all) that their petrol is of a much higher quality than ours.
Also remember we are asking more of our cars than was originally invisaged.
Mine for example only has 4.1 reductions on 32's with at least 200kg extra weight, makes sense that it would want to ping pulling all that up hills in hi range.

Ferozas have a very common problem with detonation from new! I remember a friend bought one new in '96 and had detonation problems.
I only run factory spec for timing and still have detonation- I've even had the injectors cleaned and flow tested. The timing isn't controlled by the EFI, it's got the old vacuum advance and mechanical advance in the distributor which wouldn't help.

I've heard about a third do it Mine does unless you run BP Ultimate or Shell Optimax. It's not all that bad mind you when it does do it but can be a worry on cheapo independant servo fuel. Even on the good stuff if you let it lug just a bit it can start to knock
My Vit never pinged on std fuel but that was 2 years ago, now I have to run Optimax or it pings its guts out. I reckon its the crap fuel nowadays. Besides that I get 40 to 50ks more out of a tank using Optimax. Plus it goes MUCH better.

You guys mentioned you are running high octane fuel, I thought that the older models had to run on LRP, is this not the case?
Sorry for the confusion - the people running optimax all have unleaded only cars... i.e. more recent models than what you have.
cheers

I had pinging probs with mine bot 1.3 and 1.6 litre motor .. played around with timing slightly, runs better pulls harder and no longer pings .. same case with a friends Zuk .. set to factory spec thing was useless play with timing a bit ran heaps better and had better top end speed as well.

The other thing to check is your fuel pressure. If you can find the fuel return line where it comes off your inlet manifold and clamp it off, you may well find it'll fix the pinging.....unfortunately that's not a permanent fix, but at least it will/or won't isolate your fuel regulator or fuel pump as the culprit.

I spoke to my mechanic the other day about running high octane in the 85 zook, he says not a problem the valve seats are hard enough and that I should get increased power and fuel economy. He also agreed that LRP is crap and will gunk things up.
Put the fuel in today and will see how it goes. At the moment avg fuel consumption is 9.2 km/l.
