Well my mav has a worrying oil leak, that only happens sometimes and normally when the engine is just turned off. ive been able to trace part of hte leak. its dropping on to the panhard rod at the passanger side from and engine mount under the alt. how ever all i can find is that the oil seems to be comming from the altenator, is this possible? there is a long golden color pipe off the back that has oil resedue on it and isnt connected to anything. when i bought it it was like this. this is my first car and a dd so i cant afford for it to be off the road for long or to be stuffed from not doing anything.
could anyone shed some light, or post up a picture of the rear of the altenator, from the overflow tank.
cheers
Tim
edit this is for a TD42

Not really that clear, but you MAY see the pipe you were talking about.
Is it the smaller one directly off the back?

Just had a look, and it goes to a switch/solenoid of some sort that is bolted to the side of the battery tray.
It is wired up, but can't trace the wire as it disappears under the tray.
Must just have popped off yours?

Just wondering if your vehicle is an automatic and what year model??
My '89 GQ has the piggy back style pipe fiiting but not the third pipe.
Was thinking it may be associated with an auto transmission for vacuum kick back or a later model ECU sensor.
The pipes I do have go to the brake vacuum accumulator and the other goes via a pressure switch and then on to a vacuum pot attached to the injector pump.
Run the engine and place your finger over the spare line and you should feel a vacuum. If there is a vacuum present:
a. Look for the missing vacuum line
b. block off the pipe with a rubber cap.
c. remove the spare fitting
The oil may be due coincidental due to no line being connected but may also be as a result from a faulty pump.

When i had my 91 auto it had a vac switch for the cruise control.
Either way, if you can't find a vac line without a home, block it off and you'll be fine.

put a cap on it, it does nothing mine has always had a cap on it. Also under the alternator there is a angled rubber hose that i just peplaced it is an oil return pipe $42 from nissan.

Just had a look at mine.
The tube from the vac pump runs up to the solenoid described (back of engine bay near master cylinder). There is another hose running from the other side of the solenoid down to the fuel pump. It wouldn't suprise me if it was for the air conditioning. When the compressor cuts in and out it adds a tiny amount of throttle to stop the revs dropping.
It should be pretty easy to run a new bit of hose and it's only worth a couple of dollars.

there is a vacume pump attached to the alt which uses oil
