60# steering upgrade for 40's

hi guys,
just wondering what the legalities are with the 60# steering upgrade for 40's.
i need to check whats required as my plans are to replace the chassis and tub which requires a safety cert and potentially going over the pits at qld transport. as it would be easier to do the steering box upgrade while the chassis is bare i want to know if its gonna cause issues later on.
the only none standard part required for the 60 steering upgrade is the placement of the box requiring welding of the chassis. all the other bits are standard parts that dont require modification.
if the welding is all certified and engineered (and xray'ed) is there any reason why it wouldn't pass QT inspection?

what exactly are you welding? i went 60 steering without welding a thing...

how did you mount your 60box?

http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/viewtopic.php?t=46390 ) and others have crush tubes and fish plates welded to the inside of the frame to strengthen it. I was under the impression this was std for this sort of upgrade.
any chance of pics from your setup?

yep i did mine without welding a thing
just made the crush tubes a tight fit in the chassi tapped them in with a hammer and a 5mm thick plate that goes over the chassi on the inside as a extra precausion

you dont need to have chassis welds xrayed, they just need to be done by a certtified welder in the approved manner.
YOu only need to xray steering and suspension components.

yep i did mine like PCman. tap in the crush tubes, and plate the chassis, held in place with the bolts

Thats what i would do how ever the plate would be welded to the inside of the chassis.

I did exactly as pcman and bad religion did, but I do intend on welding the plate at some stage. Just havent got around to it.

I dont know how useful the plate is without welding it. It will add some additional strength, but the chassis can still twist under the plate and crack around the bolt holes.
And if you intend on welding it it shouldn't be a square cut plate, rather a fish plate. Like a hexagon, so there isnt a full verticle weld as the welding will be much harder and more brittle and can crack if its a full verticle weld.

well.. aside from the backing plate used to strengthen the chassis,
are there any other potentially legalities? eg, due to the fact its not a standard 40# steering component, would this be an issue if it was roadworthy'ed or inspected?

i'd say you'd need to get it engineered, but as your using all factory steering parts, it should be a breeze to get passed
