by testing the travel on each side with no shock you can get a rough idea of the extended and compressed lenghts. you will want a long rear shock so you can get the most travel . i have commodore shocks and they might just work i have 2inch kings springs and 30mm spacers and mine travels untill the coil is quite loose, commodore and cressida one are what you should be looking for much cheaper than than aftermarket bout $80 pair.

We fitted to my Mates Vitara a set of VT Commodore shocks for the rear, they are really long to start with. Problem being that with the coils spacer and lifted spring, the spring sometimes fell out on extreme flex, so Unless you are running 3" or more of lift maybe go for a Commodore FE2 or lowereed shock, we later have fitted a Calmini kit but kept them in as it alows more flex than the shocks that camw with the kit. We also had a small crush tube machined up to slide into the eye so to use the original Vitara bolt at the bottom of the diff.
Go for the Monroes if you have the money they are fairly good brand to start with

Keep your OE struts and just change the coils + do a strut mount flip.
Check the bible for info.

If you want longer travel struts then you need to look at Old Man Emu or Dobinsons(apparently). Otherwise it is the strut mount flip and/or strut spacers.
