Fuses on a dual battery setup

Post by Mugs »

Hey all,
Today I fitted a Redarc isolator thingy SBI12. Pretty easy as I already had a dual battery setup but with one of those large rotary switch things. The batterys were conected to the switch whith some heavy cable, like what runs to the starter motor. This is good but a pain to work with!
The instructions with the redarc state I should use a 100 maxi fuse in line with each battery + terminal but I cant find a fuse holder that would fit on my cables. What do you guys recomend? Does it realy need to be fused? The previous switch was not.
Any help/advice would be appreciated.

If you want to fit fuses, have a look at the fuses etc that sound systems employ, they have large fuse blocks and circuit breakers.

I dont bother fitting fuses when I do dual battery fitments. If you run the cable in such a way that it wont be running on anything that can cut through the insulation, it will be fine. The same goes for the isolator, if you mount it where nothing is going to touch it,it will also be fine.
Honestly if something bad enough happens(a crash?) to cause the cable to be shorted, I really dont think a fuse is going to help.
Thats my thoughts.

Cheers for the input guys, I'll double check the wiring is not in any danger and leave it at that.
Thanks again!

Oscars, I wired all battery conections up with very fat starter cable. Is that right? I'm not sure of the mm's but had to get the auto lecy to fit the ends as I didnt have the giant crimping machine!
Just got to look for a 10A push switch for the overide.

I had my dual batteries done by ARB cos I was too lazy to do it myself... not a single fuse in sight. Not something I'm entirely happy with considering the engine bay has burnt out once already... avoid that one, it sux!!!

You could try one of these:

I don't know what amp fuses are available tho...
