stainless snorkle for a gq idears
stainless snorkle for a gq idears
i am wanting to put a 4" stainless steel snorkle on my gq i was just wondering if a 4" is the way to go or a 3" etc and where do you get the rubber bends from in vic cheers

i done mine in 4", mainly for looks wise.
i done a bit of running around to find best places for the gear,
Tube - i got 4" s/s for tube sales in thomastown, cost around 55 bucks for 2meters
Bends - i got from a place called total rubber in laverton, i think they cost just under 30bucks each, plus some ties about 4 bucks each. Plus some rubber U channel for the hole in the guard, about 5bucks
Hole - brought a 127mm hole saw from thomash warbutons in laverton for about 35 bucks, got some 4mm s/s torc head (security) screws from there for about 50cents each (to hold the snorkle in place)
Brackets - Got some 3mm s/s flat bar (about 50mm or so wide), bent that in to place drilled and taped it into my guards, made up two in the guard and one a the a pillar.
All done for under 200... job took about 3 or so hours.

can anyone tell me how i might drill out a 127mm hole in my guard where i already have a 76mm hole drilled? Do i need to tack weld a plate on and remark and drill it?

Just a word of warning. When you fit a 4" snorkel, the hole through the guard won't be round. Due to the diameter of the bend ect you will end up with a tear drop shaped hole that will be further back than you planned, to get the pipe in the correct place inside the engine bay. 4" bends are big compared to anything else so take your time and really plan things. The good thing is a 45 degree bend is bascially perfect for the windscreen and roof bends, assume the top will face backwards.

You will need to some ho clamp a peice to the guard with a 127mm hole predrilled in it to guide the hole saw.GQ Bear wrote:Hey, sorry to hijack this thread

Probably better off using a grinder or tin snips etc.

well i dont know if it gave too much air, the car didnt get anymore performance. It sucks pretty good.
In regards to cutting the hole bigger, you could either tack weld some plate behind the hole, or even just screw some wood in, it only needs hold the arba (think thats how its spelt) in place. But whatever you do, just drill real slow and take your time cos the whole saw is going to wanna bite.
With the bends, i got a 90 and 45 and its come up a treat.
Ill see if i can get some pics....

Looks good Tayls, thanks for the breif on cutting. I knew thats how i'd have to do it was just hoping there'd be an easier way, but alas life wasn't meant to be easy.
Where'd you source your bends and ss tube from? Anywhere in Bayside/SE suburbs i can get 'em from?
Was your hole circular or teardrop like some others were sugesting?
Also, is there something i can replace the std TB42e airbox with as it is a very bulky unit and it seems futile to send 4" tube into such a restrictive airbox with only a 2.5-3" inlet and outlet????????

Might have to buy a longer length of pipe than you need....

GUJohnno - what engine did you put your airbox setup in? If it was in a TD42 did you get any power increase from it all?
The ss tube i got from tube sales, cheapest place i found... and i think i wrote it before, but i got the bends from total rubber in laverton, they were a bit cheaper than the truck shops. If its too far to travel, just ring around....
i wouldnt go alloy pipe, that would be a bit weak i would have thought.
GQ Bear - just ring around for the bends and tube if its too far to travel, would only take 40 mins or so from the SE. The hole was like its in the photos, an odd shaped circle that follows the guard. In regards to the airbox, i wouldnt know because mine is a diesel.
