Outer Limits 4x4 Board

On the weekend i helped my mate change the head on his tb42.

Once the old head was off we could see 4 long cracks in it!!!! Anyway when it cane time to put the head gasket on we noticed that it blocks off a lot of the water flow around the front cylinders. The water hole get progresivly blocked the closer to the fron of the head.

Is this normal?? Should we have drilled out the gasket (we didn't) The original gasket seemed to have the same holes blocked as well.

We started at 12 (midday) on saturday and finished up at 9pm. It was pretty easy but i didnt think it would take that long. Some of the bolts were a bit fidly and the gasket on the intake manifold took a while to clean off.

With it all back together it runs a lot better now. We are pretty sure it was the original head and had done 336,000km, 200,000 of that on lpg.

talking of lpg mine is on lpg and just last week i had some one tune the gas as I dont wont dick with the gas side and the prick leaned it out it lasted two days and fried the valve stem seals at best yet to open and look at valves, rings etc..lots of smoke at idilgoes away when you drive off so might be all but down the family car untill abal to sort it out not happy jane

I have to change my head ASAP, I just put another bottle off chemi weld in there.... So Jimbo, did you guys buy the new head complete? how much etc...

It's normal for gasket to cover a couple of those front holes, about 2 i think. I don't know why and i didn't drill 'em out on mine either.

They are prone to getting hot at rear end of engine, my gasket blew at no6 and apparently this is qiute common to blow or crack here.

Maybe blocking front holes allows water to reach back of head without large cavities forming??????just a theory

GQbear i think your right abought allowing more water to the rear.

Gqswb-My mate bought a reco head that had cracks welded up, new valves and machined. I'm not sure where from but i think it was $1100 with new head bolts and gasket kit. I can find out more details if u need to know

i can get a brand new head for under 1200 most probably.

on that note,

anyone got a 42 head redrilled and taped for more water? PICS?


i am yet to see a second head with the holes where they should be.

so at a rate of inflation that is acceptable then 2200 is a good price to pay now right?

As i said i'm not 100% sure on price but $1100 rings a bell.

probably not far from the truth.. then again look at the 3.0, dropped from $10k+ to $5k.... then if you were selling that many you could afford to drop the price and still make a profit
