LT95 oil Filler

Where do I find the filler oil hole on an LT95? It's not the original gear box from my vehicle. It's had an equalising pipe put between the gearbox & transfer case (?) but try as I might, I just can't locate the filler plug. any help would be greatly appreciated as the bloody thing's dumping oil at a great rate of knots!
Cheers

There should be two filler holes, one on the box and one on the t-case. The t-case one is at the back, somewhere between the handbrake and the pto cover plate. Can't remember where the one on the box is - probably on the passenger side in the middle. The t-case should have a lower oil level than the gearbox - which may be why you are having problems with the "equaliser pipe"

Apparently the seal between the gearbox and transfer case on LT95's never really worked as they should (?) so these pipes were a common mod, or so I was told by a Rover mechanic..... anywho.... I had a look at the workshop manual but it's not particularly revealing either......

The t/case filler is on top under a rubber grommet in the trans tunnel, easiest way to fill gbox is thru the shifter.

I went through the same problem recently, ended up filling it through the level plug. very slow going.
good luck.

Hi,
In all likelihood the equaliser tube will go between the plugs for the filler hole on the gearbox and the filler hole on the TC. Brass nut with flange in both cases. Disconnect the tube and gently pull it out of the way then undo flanged brass nut and top up oil to level, then re-connect tube. It would surprise me if some has tapped the actual cases rather than the plugs to get right oil level in both.
cheers, DL

Whoops, correction on that. Big brass hex head plug on side of gearbox, square head cast iron plug on rear of TC just under PTO cover.

i have a dipstick in mine

its a very early casing rebuilt with later model short shift. quite often an equealiser tube is installed after the oil has run empty and on its last legs.

That's what I was thinking too..... damn! Nothing's ever easy!! I'll have a look on the weekend.
I understand that the early model boxes are filled from the top near the lever and later models are filled from underneath the vehicle. Just would be nice for LR to have explained which is early and which isn't in the manual!

i used to only check mine once a month or so and allways found the gbox over full by around 200ml so i just remove the filler plug and let it find its level and top up the transfer or vice versa

Had a look at this over the weekend and the only way I can see to get the oil into the box/tc is to fill via the pipe join. The next question is, how the hell do I get oil into it?! The exhaust runs under that area, so I was lucky to be abe to get my arm in there! The oil bottle I bought to fill from has a small straw included but there's no way I could get it close enough to squirt some in.....
TIA

Thats the original problem! The can't find the filler, so am assuming the pipe has been attached to the filler point. <shrug>
I'll try to grab some pics tonight.
Thanks

that would to me be the logical place for it would be to drill the filler plug and tap the hole and put a fitting in it for the hose

I removed a small cut out in the floor on the passenger side and used a funnel with a peice of 1/2in tubing taped to the end to reach the filler/level hole.[/quote]

I think they refer to early as the low comp 1.113/1 t/case and later as the hi comp 0.996/1 t/case, have you checked on top of the transfer for a filler ?what year is your rangie ?

Mine is an '81 but it was originally auto. Not sure where the manual box came from. I'll try to post up the pics I took last night but while I was under there, I could see the "inspection hatch" on top of the trans tunnel hasn't been opened before. It's still sealed and riveted so I reckon it's filled through the piping.

Is there not a large rubber bung near the drivers seat ? mine is 81' and has a bung with the t/case filler under it.

I have always been able to fill the gearbox or transfer case from below, with the overflow/leak/repair delay tube attached between the two units, check the transfer case , as the Gearbox leaks into it so generally the gearbox is full, and any external leaks mean that the transfer case is low.
Try a Tom Thumb to pump the oil in, costs about $15, really useful for gearbox, transfer and diffs. Details at STM website. I got mine at local garage.

she looks a bit leaky but it looks to me you need to undo the fittings for the copper pipe then remove the filler plug

I've got some pics of 3 gearboxes.
All are LT95s from various sources.
The fill point for the gearbox is on the LHS.
The fill point for the Tx case is on top.
The 3rd photo shows a dipstick for the gearbox.
Not sure what each gearbox is (as in early/late/ratios).
Maybe someone with more knowledge can identify them.

Sounds like mine then. How do you get the oil into the Transfer Case then with the pipe there? Do you just use a pump to get the oil into the case?

yeah i just pull the bung out and fill her up and put the bung in
