Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Could anyone please shed some light on the centre bearing arrangement in the two-piece tail-shaft on a 2004 hilux, so i don't have to pull it apart and see for myself.

Is it simply a sealed bearing held in place by a rubber ring that is compressed and held to the chassis by the saddle that surrounds it all.

I have some slight vibration issues at take off, more noticeable with load or when starting on a hill. There is some evidence that the bearing may be occasionally slipping in the rubber ring; visible scoring on the outer bearing race, and the rubber ring appears as thou it might be torn.

Only have a 2-inch lift and the centre bearing has been spaced down. Wonder if toymotor will give me warranty on it?

they probly wont warrant it due to it being lifted, they're tight arses when it comes to that

I replace the 2 piece tail shaft with a 1 piece and get rid of the center bearing
I am doing a conversion now if you want to have a look

wat are the benifits apart from getting rid of center bearing?

If you have a engine conversion and have some horse power you wont be choping out centre bearings every 6 month also it takes some extreme angles of the universals

Adrian how does this swap go on an Extra cab Lux with its extra wheelbase?
That would be a long sucker of a shaft?
I was thinking of doing this to mine in the future.
Can a heavier wall tube be used to handle a bit of rocks?
Do you use a double cardan joint or just standard unis?

The conversion I have just done [went out today] was a LWB extra cab Hilux
The shaft was 1.620 long and used a larger diameter tube for the length,
and use the stock Toyota unis
I have not yet found iI need a double cardon on the shaft because of the length, the unis dont flex as much

No problems, mine has a shudder that is more noticable on hills, has been blamed on the clutch and I have replaced a few centre bearings since owning it.

Is that all they are...bearing and big rubber ring? I'll get off my backside tomorrow and go and pull it apart and check the bearing.

I'm fairly sure with the Yota centre bearings, if you are taking it off the tailshaft REMEMBER to unlock the thread (you'll see what I mean when you come to it). You will damage the thread if you just rattle it off.
